Dallas Mavericks’ star Josh Howard turned heads on Friday when he admitted on the Michael Irvin Radio show that he smokes marijuana regularly in the off-season.  Equally as shocking was his willingness to implicate the entire league with regard to marijuana use.

Were Howard’s admissions and candor a sign of things to come from pro athletes?  Will their discretion come in to question when and if they admit to drug use and or other sordid behavior?  Fans across the country are wondering just what to make of this scenario so once again beating everyone to the punch, the largest most successful sportsbook on the web, Bet US.com is providing them with answers.

NBA Playoffs Betting - Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets haven’t been able to slow down Kobe Bryant and the Lakers so far but they hope their home court will provide them with enough of an advantage to get back in the series on Saturday.  The Nuggets were a sparkling 33-8 at home this season. “It’s our turn to hold serve,” Nuggets coach George Karl said, “It’s a great challenge, a lot of fun. The home court’s been kind of our biggest ally all year long.”  SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Lakers on the Road.

Denver hasn’t played any defense so far in this series, giving up an average of 125 points per game to the Lakers.  Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol have ripped them apart but the Nuggets believe things will turn around on Saturday. “My sense is all year long when this team had its true back to the wall, they’ve responded great and the home court’s been a big part of that,” Karl said. “I think there’s an energy out there. Statistically there’s all sorts of positives that come our way here. We play better defense here.”  They sure couldn’t play defense much worse than they did in Los Angeles.

The problem for the Nuggets is that they were next to last in the NBA this season allowing 107 points per game. Perhaps the home court advantage will be enough for Denver to make this a series. “I don’t think you’re going to see wholesale changes. They believe in their style of play,” the Lakers Derek Fisher said. “Defensively, I think they’ll play even more zone than we saw last night. I don’t expect them to do too many things differently than they’ve done so far. I just expect them to do them better on their home court.”

SBG Global Current Line: Nuggets  -1.5 , Total 230

The Lakers are only 4-6 in their last 10 road games in Denver.  Here are more NBA betting stats for Saturday’s game.  The Lakers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Lakers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a road underdog. The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Conference Quarterfinals games. The Lakers are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 road games. The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Denver.

The Nuggets are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a home favorite. The Nuggets are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. the Pacific. The Nuggets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Nuggets are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 Conference Quarterfinals games. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between the two teams and the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

The Over is 8-2 in the Lakers last 10 Saturday games. The Over is 5-2 in the Lakers last 7 playoff games as an underdog. The Over is 7-3 in the Lakers last 10 Conference Quarterfinals games.

The Under is 17-4 in the Nuggets last 21 Conference Quarterfinals games. The Over is 15-6 in the Nuggets last 21 games as a home favorite.

Betting the First Round of the 2008 NBA Playoffs

NBA online bettors are gearing up for the start of the NBA 2008 playoffs, which already began on Saturday, April 19. There is no shortage of betting opportunities on the playoffs, as NBA basketball gamblers can bet games individually, make wagers on which team will win the series, along with a number of propositions bets that will be available. Check our online NBA Playoffs odds.

There is a general perception that betting the underdogs and taking the unders are the way to go in the playoffs, but looking at the first-round results from the 2006-07 NBA playoffs, shows that out of 41 games, the underdogs were just 19-20-2 against the point spread, while under bettors would have been 22-19.

Combing the unders with the underdogs would have resulted in a 41-39-2 record and a loss of 1.9 units. The first games in each series did tend to go under, however, as six of the eight opening games fell under the total, meaning that 17 of the next 33 games went over the total.

Several Playoff Systems

Since a number of bettors like to follow systems, here are several that have shown some success in the past, but as I always say, past success doesn’t always translate into future success.

1. Bet Against Teams Off a 33-Point or Greater Victory
Bettors who have gone against such lopsided victors have gone on a 9-0 run.

2. Take Home Teams as Underdogs if They’re Down 2-0
Teams down 2-0 after two games are essentially in a must-win situation and have a 20-9 record against the spread, but as we mentioned in an earlier article, if these teams lose the third game, they tend to be poor wagers in the fourth game, as they recognize the writing on the wall and tend to let down, knowing it’s essentially a lost cause.

Have fun with the 2008 NBA playoffs and don’t go overboard on your wagers. The post-season tends to be a bit more difficult to handicap than the regular season, but if you’re patient and look for the right opportunities, they will appear.

NBA Playoffs Betting Preview

Houston Rockets vs. Utah Jazz

A series that looked to be competitive could end very quickly if the Utah Jazz does as expected and win at home. The Jazz won both road games at Houston and now come home where they had the NBA’s best home record. “We go into the game knowing that both teams have seen a great deal of each other,” Utah forward Carlos Boozer said.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Washington Wizards

The Cleveland Cavaliers will try and take a commanding lead in their series against the Washington Wizards on Thursday. The Cavaliers did as expected at home, winning the first two games. Now it will be up to Washington to answer. The series has been very physical so far and that may not change on Thursday.

Los Angeles Lakers vs Denver Nuggets Betting Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to avoid a letdown in Game #2 on Wednesday as they host the Denver Nuggets.  The Lakers had little trouble in game one and are wary of the Nuggets coming out hard in game two. “The pressure’s still on us. We still have the pressure to win on our home court, play as hard as we did before.” Lakers’ head coach Phil Jackson said, “It’s very difficult for a team to come back with the same intensity.” SBG Global reports that early NBAbetting has the public taking Lakers at Home.

The Lakers were led in game one by Pau Gasol who had 36 points and 16 rebounds.  Gasol does not expect things to be as easy in game #2. “When Marcus left me, most of the time they didn’t cut off that second man. That second man helper didn’t get there on those rotations to me. I guess they will try to allow us to shoot more from the outside and not get in the lane as easy as we did. You’d rather give up open long shots than layups and dunks.”  The total on game #2 is almost five points higher than in game number one since the teams combined to score 242 points on Sunday.

Here are the NBA betting stats for Wednesday’s game.  The Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games. The Nuggets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 playoff games as an underdog. The Nuggets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Conference Quarterfinals games. The Nuggets are 1-8 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Los Angeles.

The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite. The Lakers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a home favorite. The Lakers are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 playoff games as a favorite. The home team is 13-5 ATS in the last 18 meetings between the two teams.

The Under is 5-1 in the Nuggets last 6 overall. The Under is 13-3 in the Nuggets last 16 playoff games as an underdog. The Under is 16-5 in the Nuggets last 21 Conference Quarterfinals games.

The Over is 4-1 in the Lakers last 5 games as a home favorite. The Under is 6-2 in the Lakers last 8 Wednesday games. The Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Los Angeles between the two teams.

Making Bets For The First 5 Innings

Just as football and basketball bettors have the option of making bets solely for the first half, a number of sportsbooks are now allowing baseball gamblers to do the same thing by betting the first five innings of a game. There are times when a five-inning wager makes more sense than the conventional bet and we’ll look at some of those in this article.

One of the great things about a five-inning wager is that it typically plays out to form more than a nine-inning game. The starting pitchers, which are usually the basis for any baseball wager, have more of an impact on the outcome in a five-inning game than they do in a regulation game, as the bullpen shouldn’t come into play. If it does, you’re probably in trouble, as that means your starting pitcher didn’t last five innings, which will normally result in a loss.

Very rarely will the difference between a five-inning and a full game be more than five cents on the moneyline and because of that, many times those bettors who like an underdog may receive better value with the five-inning bet.

In theory, a longer game should favor the better team, while the underdog is likely to fare better in a shorter contest. While the Red Sox may be -160 favorites over the Rangers in a nine-inning game, the Red Sox could be expected to be -250 favorites in a 27-inning game, as the longer the game goes on, the greater the chances are that the better team will win in the long run.

By the same token, the Red Sox should only be favored around -135 in a three-inning game, as the Rangers have a better opportunity of being in front in a shorter game. The same holds true in a five-inning game in that the favorite should actually be slightly less of a favorite than it is for a nine-inning game, especially if the starting pitchers are close to being evenly matched, so the underdogs may offer better value for bettors.

Don’t Worry About the Bullpen

In today’s game, some teams are hesitant to use their closer two days in a row, while it’s nearly universal among managers that you don’t use your closer three days in a row and teams will often try to get a save from a different pitcher or coax a complete game out of their starter if the closer has made two straight appearances. One game doesn’t mean nearly as much in the long run as seeing your closer go on the disabled list with a bad arm, so teams are more willing to take its chances with somebody else, which is why in the 2007 season a closer like the Mets’ Billy Wagner had 34 saves, but three other pitchers combined for five additional saves during the season.

By tracking which closers have worked for two straight games or pitched more than an inning in the previous game, and are unlikely to see action in a game, baseball bettors may want to give the five-inning wager a closer look, as they will not have to worry about the bullpen blowing the lead in the late innings.

Complete games are fairly rare and practically every baseball bettor has watched in horror as their team leads 4-2 in the seventh inning and removes its starter, only to see the bullpen surrender the lead and lose the game before the closer makes his appearance. Some teams are practically notorious for this and are often risky bets in a nine-inning game, but can be played with a bit more confidence in the five-inning contest. This is especially true for starters who are known to be able to last only six or seven innings.

Pay Attention to the Batting Order

Many times one of the key differences between a team that scores a lot of runs and a team that is in the middle of the pack in scoring rests in the bottom part of the batting order. A good American League team will often decent hitters batting in the last three spots in the order, including a No. 9 hitter who is essentially a second lead-off man, while middle of the pack teams may have a couple of .230 hitters buried at the bottom of the order.

In a five-inning game, if the side were retired in order all five trips to the plate, the No. 1 through No. 6 hitters would all make two plate appearances, while the No. 7 through No. 9 hitters would only hit once.

In a nine-inning game, the entire batting order is guaranteed to make three trips to the plate, so there is a very slight edge to the team with the stronger No. 1 through No. 6 hitters.

Among starters who pitched 162 innings in 2007, the median WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) was 1.32, meaning that a pitcher would face 4.32 batters in an average inning. If that average is factored into a full nine-inning game, every batter would make four trips to the plate, while the No. 1 through No. 3 hitters would make five plate appearances. In a five-inning game, every batter would make two trips to the plate, while the No. 1 through No. 4 hitters would make three plate appearances, so a team’s best power hitter should receive an extra at bat. There’s also the added benefit the weaker-hitting team receives of not having the bottom of the batting order come up an additional time, as that should favor the better-hitting team.

Bwin Defends Online Gambling In Slander Case

Austrian online gambling group strikes back for the industry

The Vienna-listed online gambling group Bwin has revealed that it has taken the organisers of the French Open tennis tournament to court for slander in a legal counterattack following litigation to ban Internet betting at the Grand Slam tournament.

The case dates back to February this year, when the tennis organisers filed complaints in Belgium and Paris claiming that computer betting companies stain the reputation of the clay-court championship.

“Following claims by the French tennis federation that services offered by online sports betting operators present a danger to the ethics of sport, Bwin is suing the organisers of the French Open for damages before a Paris court,” a Bwin statement advised.

A Belgian court in Liege heard arguments in the case last Friday and is expected to rule before the French Open starts on May 25.

The issue of integrity in tennis surfaced last year when an online betting site - Betfair.com - voided all wagers on a match in Poland between fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko and 87th-ranked Martin Vassallo Arguello because of irregular betting patterns.

The French federation is suing Bwin, Betfair and Ladbrokes - demanding a court injunction to stop these companies from taking bets on the French Open. It seeks a fine of Euro 50 000 euros a day for any violations (see previous InfoPowa report).

Bwin spokesman Antoine Costanzo claims that the head of the French tennis federation made slanderous comments when he launched the court case and that his company seeks Euro 1 million in damages as a consequence. Bwin claims legal standing because it is a major provider of online gaming entertainment.

Countering the allegations of French Open organisers, the European Gaming and Betting Association said that the Internet is an excellent tool to trace any irregularities in betting operations. The organisation, which has most of Europe’s top online gambling companies among its members, said Internet operations left “…a perfect audit trail, one that can, where appropriate, be shared with regulators and other authorities in order to trace bets and hence provide valuable evidence in the fight against fraud.”

French Open organisers said that betting companies are tainting the reputation of the tournament and unfairly using it as a way of making money. They argued that if a match-fixing scandal hit the French Open, it would undermine the value of the tournament, which in 2007 had revenue of Euro 118 million and attracted 450 000 fans to Roland Garros.

The EGBA insisted betting companies stood to lose just as much. “Any match-fixing would penalise bookmakers severely as they take financial risk when setting odds for all sporting events,” it said in a statement.

Vienna-based bwin has said it was confident it would be able to stave off the legal challenge, insisting it does no more than offer a fair and legal service. Along with football and horse racing, tennis is among the most popular sports to bet on in Europe.
