The NFL Week 4 Predictions

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Will Curl @ 1:14 pm

Week 4 of the NFL season is here and there looks like many of these games could come down to the wire.  This makes betting a true sport all its own.  There are many who research the ins and outs each game all week long before they place their bet.  They have to know exactly what the computer says about each team and the probability of this and that before they commit.  Then there are those who go by their gut.  They know football and they know that regardless of all the numbers and hype you really don’t have a definitive clue until game day.  The games are decided on the gridiron.  For some betting is fun and for others it is a way of life.  I write by the numbers and I write from my gut so that all betters get the scoop.

The first game we are going to cover is the Baltimore Ravens at the New England Patroits.  The Pats are a 1.5 point favorite.  We know they are not going to win by 1.5 points but they should win.  Tom Brady finally got back into the groove against the Falcons and playing at home will be in his favor.  The Ravens are on a roll but I like the Patroits at home 22-17.

The New York Jets journey to New Orleans to take on the Saints.  Drew Brees can definately put up some big passing numbers against most anyone but the Jet defense has been hungry and agressive.  The Saints are 7 point favorites here because of their high powered offense.  This is my upset pick of the week.  The Saints have not looked well on defense this year and I think they will get stunned here.  I like the Jets by a field goal 24-21.

The San Diego Chargers face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night.  The Steelers are a 6.5 point favorite even though they are off to a 1-2 start and showing signs of a superbowl hangover.  The thing about a team like the Steelers is that even when they are not 100% they are still better than most teams.  The Chargers are not hitting on all cylindars either and thats why I am taking the Steelers at home 27-20.

Monday night the Green Bay Packers go to Minnesota to take on the Vikings and Brett Farve.  Later in the year the Vikings will travel to Lambeau and that should be even more interesting as Farve returns back to the land of the cheese heads.  Still, this game offers some drama as well.  The Vikings pulled it out in the last 2 seconds against San Francisco when Farve threw a 32 yard TD pass.  The Packers have not looked great this year although many picked them to win the division easily.  The Vikings are favored by 3.5 and I like them at home as well.  The Vikings will win 20-16.

Of Friday we will cover all the major sporting news prior to the weekend.  We will take a look at the MLB race winding down and offer a few NCAA football predictions as well.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Week 3 Review And Week 4 At A Glance

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Will Curl @ 10:45 am

I picked the Jets to beat the Titans and that is exactly what they did.  The Jets looked very good in their 24-17 victory over the now 0-3 Titans.  The Jets are off to a 3-0 start.  The Vikings and 49ers were involved in one of those nail biters I was talking about but the comeback kid Brett Farve lifted the Vikings to paydirt when he threw a 32 yard TD pass with only 2 seconds left for a 27-24 win.  The Vikings are off to a 3-0 start as well.  The Patroits defeated the Falcons easily 26-10.  I thought it would have been closer.  I picked the Cardinals to pull one out at home but the Colts and Peyton Manning had other ideals.  The Colts destroyed the Cardinals 31-10.  The World Champion Steelers fell too 1-2 on the season as they lost a nail biter to the now 2-1 Bengals.  The Wendy’s Hamburger slogan used to be ‘Where’s the Beef?’  I have to ask the Steelers ‘Where’s the Defense?’  The Champs have lost their last 2 games by a field goal and should have won both games easily.

Week 4 appears to offer some more exciting matchups.  For starters the Baltimore Ravens travel to New England to face the Patroits.  The Ravens are off to a 3-0 start and are enjoying a slow start by the Steelers in that AFC North Division.  They pounded the hopeless 0-3 Cleveland Browns yesterday 34-3 but the Patroits are not the Browns.  This is going to be a good game.  Of course the key will be how much pressure that Raven defense can put on Tom Brady.  If they do they can win but if Brady has time in the pocket it could be a long day.  I will extend my pick later in the week.  The early lines favor the Patriots by 2.

The New York Jets will be taking the journey to ‘The Big Easy’ or New Orleans as most of it know it, to take on the Saints.  The Jets may not find it so easy down there.  However, the Jets are on a roll.  They appear to be solid and even though the Saints are a 6 point favorite early on this is based on their offensive capabilities.  The Saints lack a defense.  The Jets have one and can score as well.

The San Diego Chargers are going to Pittsburgh to take on the “Has anyone seen my defense?” Steelers.  The Steelers are still a great team.  However something is not clicking.  They appear to be getting better at their running game but now the defense is lacking.  That number one defense of last year does not seem to be pressuring the QB.  The Steelers are back at home and this should be a good one.

Next Monday night the Green Bay Packers journey to Minnesota to take on the Vikings and Brett Farve.  Although it will be much more exciting when Farve and the Vikings return to Lambeau Field this is still an eye catcher.  The Vikings are favored by 3 in what should be a great game.  The Packers are still not hitting on all cylinders.  They are hit and miss.  The Vikings had to win in the final 2 seconds yesterday.  My pick later in the week.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Week 3: Let The Betting Begin!

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Tags: , , — Will Curl @ 10:09 am

Week 3 of the NFL season is upon us and there are a few games this week that are going to be real nail biters.  There are some matchups this week that may cause some fellows to nibble their fingers right down to the first knuckle.  But hey thats what makes the game great.  Let’s start with the Tennessee Titans at the New York Jets.  The money line is on the Jets at -150.  The point spread is -3 favoring the Jets.  This game will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Early in the season and the Titans need a big win.  The Jets are off to a great start and need to stay in front of the AFC East.  My pick:  Jets 20 Titans 10.

The San Francisco 49ers roll into Minnesota to take on the Vikings.  As I commented on this past summer Brett Farve has completed the package in Minnesota and regardless of all the hype the Vikings are 2-0.  However, they have beaten the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions.  The money line is -280 in favor of the Vikings who are also a -6.5 point spread favorite.  The 49ers are newly motivated and rolling.  Adrian Peterson is a beast for the Vikings and they are at home.  This game will say a lot about each of these teams.  My pick:  Vikings 21 49ers 14.

How about those surging Atlanta Falcons making the trip to the New England area to face the Patriots.  New England dropped one to the Jets last week after they administered the promised pressure on Tom Brady all day long.  The Falcons are off to a great start and look very credible thus far.  The Patriots are favored by 4 in the spread and the money line is in their favor as well at -210.  This game presents the new kids on the block against the old.  The Patriots are at home and they need to keep check with the Jets.  My pick:  Patriots 21 Falcons 17.

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts travel to take on last years NFC Champions the Arizona Cardinals.  The Colts are off to a 2-0 start.  The Cardinals dropped their first game but came back this past week with thunder and QB Kurt Warner looking nearly perfect.  The Colts have won a couple close games.  This will be a good one.  The Cardinals are favored by 2.5 in the point spread and the money line is -145.  My Pick:  Cardinals 24 Colts 21.

Let those nails grow out by Sunday because you will need as much as possible to bite on.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sportsbook Gazette Weekly Sports Roundup!

On Saturday night the much anticipated battle in the boxing ring between Juan Marquez and Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will explode into reality. Juan Marquez is moving up from super featherweight for this fight and there has been much debate about his ability to fight at welterweight level. Although the Internet commercial would like us to believe that the Internet is faster than Floyd Mayweather chances are Juan Marquez will not be.

There is no doubt that Marquez has prepared for this fight but Mayweather has proven to be a beast in the ring. Mayweather, even after some down time, will be stronger, faster and too much for Marquez to handle. You can take that too the bank.

Now it is time for me to pick my NFL upset game of the week. The Carolina Panthers are taking a trip down I-85 to take on the Atlanta Falcons. We know last week that the Panthers fell apart to the Philadelphia Eagles. We also know that the Atlanta Falcons manhandled the Miami Dolphins.

The Falcons looked poised for greatness while the Panthers looked bewildered and shocked. The Falcons are favored in this matchup by 6 points but I don’t think that they will. Jake Delhomme is the QB for the Panthers. He has thrown 7 interceptions in his past 2 games. However, Jake knows his future is on the line. The Panthers did not sign A.J. Feeley for nothing. If Jake has another super poor outing he may very well get ousted. Jake is going to bounce back and make the plays he has too for the win. He has too. Of course it will help if the Panthers can run the ball with their two great backs Stewart and Williams as well. My pick: Panthers 21-17.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL. They rarely get the respect they deserve. No one really jumps on their bandwagon until they have no choice to do so but look stupid. Very few picked them to win their last 2 Superbowls and the fact that they have acquired 6, most in the NFL has done little to earn them anymore respect. But never the less they do have 6 and since they won the first back in the early 70’s they have been one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. Their fans are as loyal as any in the league and their players always make the statement, “once a Steeler, always a Steeler” no matter where they wind up. Last year there were numerous complaints about the Steeler offensive line and their running game.

All the Steelers did was go on to win Superbowl number 6 regardless. There are those that still go on to mimick the fact that they won a lot of close games and had to rally on game winning drives and pull the victory out of their….hat. Perhaps so, but they did it and they beat most people’s choice the Baltimore Ravens 3 times in the process. Thats okay. That is how the Steeler fans like it.

There are those who just know DA Bears will be too much for the Steelers this weekend even though the Steelers are favored by 3. They just can’t get any respect. The proof will be in the pudding on gameday and many sports writers will grunt and grimace once again. Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NCAA Football This Week!

The NCAA Football season is well underway with the Florida Gators riding high at number 1. The Gators play host to the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday afternoon.

Tennessee under new Head Coach Lane Kiffin were knocked off UCLA and the Bruins are not the Gators. The Gators are heavily favored in this one by more than 4 touchdowns.

They should win it easily. Number 2 in the Nation the Texas Longhorns had their way with the Wyoming Cowboys last week and should do the same against Texas Tech. Although Texas Tech won easily last week they are 17.5 point underdogs to their in state rivals the Longhorns.

Number 3 USC is on the road to Washington to take on the Huskies. The Trojans knocked off Ohio State and are favored by 18.5 over the Huskies. I cannot see any evidence to the contrary. Number 4 this week is the Alabama Crimson Tide. They will host North Texas and are favored by 38 points. This one could be ugly. Number 5 is the Penn State Nittany Lions Will play host to Temple. Penn State is favored by 30 and this one could get out of hand as well.

Coming in at number 7 is the Brigham Young. They are hosting Florida State. BYU is favored by 7.5 points. This should be a good one but in the end the BYU Cougars will have too much fire power for the Florida State Seminoles. At number 8 the California Golden Bears take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Although California is a 14 point favorite this one could be closer than some think. At number 9 is the LSU Tigers. They host LA Layfayette. The Tigers should coast in this one and they are favored by 26 and a half points.

The number 11 Ohio State Buckeyes travel to Toledo, Ohio and are favored by 20 and a half points. This should be an easy pickup by the Buckeyes but you just never know for sure. The number 12 Oklahoma Sooners host Tulsa and although they are only favored by 17 and a half points, it could get much worse. When it comes to college football you just can’t beat the team spirit that is presented at the games. T

hat spirit, on occasion, can give a good football team the edge they need to prevail. This has all the makings of a great week in NCAA Football. Autumn is in the air and the smell of the pigskin reminds us of gridiron battles long ago fought but not forgotten. Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Picks For Week 2: Bet Your Heart Out!

The Oakland Raiders travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs on Sunday. The Raiders gave San Diego all they could handle on Monday night even though they fell short. The Raiders are a 3 point underdog and I am afraid they will fall short again. The Chiefs gave The Baltimore Ravens all they could handle last week and that was without Matt Cassel. My Pick: Chiefs 28-14.

The New England Patroits had to come from behind to beat the Buffalo Bills Monday night and now they travel to the land of the New York Jets who sent the Houston Texans home wondering what happened. Jets QB Mark Sanchez looked good for a rookie but can the Jets beat New England QB Tom Brady and the Patroits and cover the 3.5 point spread? The answer is not likely. Although the Patroit defense looked frail they will beat the Jets. My Pick: Patroits 24-17

The New Orleans Saints are off to Philadelphia to face the Eagles who are fresh off of destroying the Carolina Panthers. The Saints won their opener as well beating the Detroit Lions. However, the Eagles are not the Lions. The Saints have a powerful offense and QB Drew Brees threw 6 TDs on Sunday but the Eagle defense is the real deal. This game is even right now and remember Eagle QB Donovan McNabb cracked a rib and Micael Vick is inelligeble to play this week. If McNabb cannot go, Kevin Kolb starts. Regardless my pick: Eagles 24-21.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road to Chicago to take on DA Bears. The Steelers played a tough game against the Tennessee Titans last Thursday and won with a field goal in overtime. This being said they played one of the best opponents in the AFC. DA Bears lost late to the Green Bay Packers who did not impress me as of yet. Of course the Bears did not either and LB Brian Urlacher is out for the year. My Pick: Steelers 20-10 which will cover the 3 point spread.

Sunday night the New York Giants take on the Cowboys in Dallas. As long as the new stadium screen hanging from the roof does not block all the punts this should be a dandy. The Giants defeated the Redskins last week and the Cowboys walked over the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Giants are not hitting on all cylinders yet but the Cowboys look like they are. The Cowboys have 3 point odds but I am going to take it up a notch. My pick: Cowboys 27-17.

Monday night the Indianapolis Colts are headed for sunny Florida to take on the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins had to swim for their lives in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons in last weeks opener. Miami QB Pennington did not play well. The Colts barely got by Jacksonville. The Colts are 3 point favorites and that is not going to be a problem. My pick: Colts 22-13.

It is going to be another great week in the NFL. There is room for some sound betting this week. There is also room for some surprises. Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

I Bet You Don’t Want Too Miss These NFL Picks For Today!

Thursday night the defending Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Tennessee Titans 13-10. The defense was tough on both teams.

In the end it was Big Ben who delivered another final drive for a game winner. Credit has too go to the Steeler offensive line, which gave Ben all the time he needed to throw in the second half when the Titan pass rush became non-existent. Titan Coach Jeff Fisher stated he did not come to Pittsburgh to kiss the 6 Superbowl rings that the Steelers have earned but in the end he may have done just that.

There are a few 1:00 games today that are worthy to mention. First of all lets take a look at the Miami Dolphins at the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan and the up and coming Falcons are eager to prove that last year was not fluke. Hosting the uncertain Miami Dolphins allows them a perfect opportunity to do just that. Miami Quarterback Chad Pennington had a pretty good first year with the Dolphins after being traded from the Jets who had obtained future Hall of Fame QB Brett Farve. Now Farve is in Minnesota supporting their dreams of Superbowl contention and Pennington is hoping to take the Dolphins to the promise land as well.

The 4 point spread in this game is in favor of the Falcons. This game should produce some fireworks. On paper it would seem that this could be a big year for the Falcons. Pennington has the opportunity to be a game changer. This will not be a defensive gem. My pick: Falcons 24-20.

Perhaps the more anticipated game is the match up between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers host the Eagles in what should prove to be an exciting week one explosion. Both teams entered the NFC playoffs last year only to go home. The Eagles are considered to be one of the favorites in the NFC again this year. The Eagles are favored by 2.5 points in this one.

This game will be determined in the trenches between the offensive and defensive lines. The Panthers need to run the ball well and their passing game will have to be consistent as well. They will have to get the ball into Steve Smith’s hands even though he double covered regularly. The Eagles boast a powerful offense on paper and they will need all of it today. My pick: Eagles 21-17.

Check out our live odds link for the latest NFL lines. It should be an exciting week 1 of the 2009 NFL season where nothing is written in stone. Perhaps someone will play over their head today or someone will play below their potential. The anticipation is growing.

NFL Season Kicks Off Tonight! The Steelers vs The Titans

Initially I was going to write about the upcoming college football match ups for this weekend but this NFL game tonight is just too darn big to ignore. Yes, it is the first game of the season but have no doubt in your mind that this game is huge.

The World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers became the first NFL team to win 6 Super Bowls last February. The Tennessee Titans beat the Steelers late last season fairly easily but fell in the playoffs to the Ravens. This rematch, although the first game of the season is critical to both of these teams.

I am not saying if either team loses their season is over. What I am saying is that it is important to get off on the right foot. Both of these teams are expected to be in the thick of the race for the AFC Championship. Both of these teams would like to establish early that they are the team to reckon with. There is very little love loss between these two teams as well. The Titans enhanced that dislike by stomping a terrible towel into the dirt angering many Steeler fans and players as well.

Both of these teams are credible contenders in the AFC. Tennessee Coach Jeff Fisher has put together a team that could finally take him all the way. The defense is solid even without Albert Haynesworth. The offense is still efficient under Kerry Collins and running back Chris Johnson. It all looks good on paper…but can they beat the Steelers on opening day in Pittsburgh?

The Pittsburgh Steelers, although being the only team to win 6 Super Bowls, rarely earn the respect due them by sports critics. The Steelers are simply to low key to provide the excitement and press nightmares that most teams deliver. The Steelers and Pittsburgh were made for each other.

They are the working class football team. No flair, No hype. The Steelers simply go to work each Sunday and do their job and quietly stack up Super Bowls. After the Steelers won the Super Bowl after the 1995 season they only managed an 8-8 record in 2006. This weighs heavy on the minds of Steeler fans. Can this year be different?

Tonight many answers to these questions will be established. I can think of no better game, no better match up to begin the 2009 season. The Titans have talked the talk in an effort to convince themselves of their ability. Tonight they will have a chance to walk that talk.

Many truths will be confronted in Pittsburgh tonight. I said on Monday that the Steelers will win 20-13. I stand by that prediction. One thing for sure it should be one heck of a game. Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Notable NFL Games: Week 1

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Tags: , , — Will Curl @ 10:14 am

The National Football League season is back. Life will not be the same for many girlfriends and house wives until the season draws to a close. There is something special about the start of the NFL season. The anticipation has been growing during the off season and hearts race wildly until the first true kickoff. The dedicated have tried to find solace in other sports since the final seconds ticked off the clock in last years Super Bowl but nothing seems to quite satisfy their thirst like the action on the gridiron. They found some comfort in watching the NFL Draft and by staying up to date on the latest trades and hype and then began to find some comfort in the preseason but nothing fills that gap like the actual start of the season when it all counts for real. That long awaited day is upon us. On Thursday the Tennessee Titans travel to Pittsburgh to face the Super Bowl Champion Steelers. Lets begin our journey there.

The last time the Steelers won the Super Bowl after the 2005 season their record fell to 8-8 the next season. Last year the Steelers were dealt the hardest schedule in the NFL and they weathered it on the way to their 6th Lombardi Trophy. The Steelers begin this season however against a competent foe. The Titans went 13-3 last year looking like the cream of the crop until they fell to the Raven in the Playoffs. The Titans should win their division again this year but they won’t win against the Steelers on Thursday. With 2 great defensive teams this one could be close but great teams find ways to win and the Steelers are a great team. The Steelers are picked to win with a 5 point spread. They will make that spread. My prediction: Pittsburgh 20-13.

The Miami Dolphins are on the road to face the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta is favored with a 4 point spread. The Falcons are in the process of building great things. Last year rookie Quarterback Matt Ryan was a pleasant surprise. The addition of Michael Turner at running back last season only sweetened the sauce. This year they have added pro bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez as well. The Falcons are on the brink of something very sweet indeed. The Dolphins are looking much better under Quarterback Chad Pennington although he had a rough time in the playoffs last year. This one should also be close but look for the Falcons to meet the spread and start off 2009 on a positive note. My prediction: Falcons 22-17.

The Minnesota Vikings are on their way to Cleveland, Ohio to face the Browns. Although there is a 4 point spread in this game with the Vikings favored I personally do not feel it will be that close. Perhaps a month ago this game may have been close but since Brett Farve has joined the Vikings I believe he is the final piece of the puzzle for a team that sports perhaps the best running back in the league with Adrian Peterson and a truly great defense that has been waiting for an offense to support it. The Browns are still building. Brady Quinn will more than likely finally get an opportunity to start but he has much to prove. Farve does not have to be the Farve of old. If he can help control the tempo of the game and throw enough to help them win then the Vikings will be a team to deal with in 2009. My prediction: Vikings 21-3.

The Chicago Bears are enroute to Green Bay to take on the Packers. The Packers are picked to win with a 3.5 point spread to cover. This is my upset game of the week. I think the Bears will rally in this one and the addition of Jay Cutler at Quarterback will be the deciding factor. Yes that Bears defensive is showing some age but they are still competent and Matt Forte is coming off a great year at running back. In addition anytime you have Devin Hester returning the football anything can happen. The Packers are a viable foe and Aaron Rodgers has weathered a year in the shadow of Farve but I believe the Bears will prevail at home. My prediction: Chicago 23-17.

There are some great matchups in week 1 of the NFL Season. Check out our odds for the edge you need and then bet with as much confidence as you can in the world of the National Football League where every Sunday what should be may not happen. Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.
