Sports News You Can Bet On

The Phillies were not very good house guests last night when they stunned the New York Yankees at home 6-1.  Phillies pitching ace Cliff Lee looked like he could have pitched 27 innings without breaking a sweat and the Yankees modern day murders row turned out to be quite harmless.  In game 2 the Yankees will try to get back on track with A.J.  Burnett while the Phillies rely on Yankee nemisis Pedro Martinez.  This should be a barn burner.  The reigning world champion Phillies are off to a great start.  The Yankees will have to overcome the Philadelphia pitching if they want to win it all for the 27th time.

The Denver Broncos have to be reciting the famous phrase by commedian Rodney Dangerfield ” I get no respect I tell Ya, No respect”.  Denver travels to Baltimore for a major NFL matchup.  The Broncos are 6-0 this season and the Ravens are a dismal 3-3 and hardly living up to their expectations and yet the Ravens are still favored by 3.  This means that Denver has yet to convince anyone they are for real.  This game is going to be hard fought but I am afraid Denvers luck is about to run out.  My pick:  Baltimore 20-13

The New York Giants take a little trip down to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.  The Giants are 5-2 while the Eagles are 4-2.  This one will depend a lot on which teams show up.  Both have looked very good and then very bad.  It is going to come down to who wants it more.  The Giants are favored by 1.  This one will be decided in the trenches.  I like the Giants 17-14

Monday night the Atlanta Falcons journey to New Orleans to take on the 6-0 Saints.  The Falcons are 4-2 and on paper you might think this will be a fair matchup.  The Saints are favored by 10 but have the capability of blowing this one out.  I like the Saints 35-21

I saved the best for last.  Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings slide over to Green Bay at frigid Lambeau field to take on da Packers.   There is going to be a rumble in cheese town.  Farve is going home to Green Bay but it is not to a ticker tape parade.  Fresh off of their defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers last sunday the 6-1 Vikings need this victory against their division foes the 4-2 Packers.  The Vikings are still the real deal.  The Packers are getting there.  The Pack is favored by 3 but I like the Vikings 24-20

I also like the Texans over Buffalo, the Bears over the Browns, the Cowboys over the Seahawks, the Rams over the Lions, the Colts over the 49ers, the Dolphins over the Jets, the Chargers over the Raiders, the Jags over the Titans and the Cardinals over the Panthers.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Yankees Are In The World Series Again

The 2009 World Series is set.  Last years World Champion Philadelphia Phillies will take on perhaps the most honored baseball franchise of all time in the New York Yankees.

Philadelphia would no doubt like to win their second Championship in a row.  The Yankees of course will have other ideas.  The Yankee Dynasty is stuff of legend.  The Yankees made it to the World Series the for the first time in 1921.  They lost to the New York Giants.  They lost to them again in 1922.  In 1923 however the trend changed and the Yankees won their first World Series over the Giants 4 games to 2 and as they say in the books the rest is history.

The Yankees participated in their first World Series about 88 years ago.  This year they are participating in their 40th bid for a World Championship.  They are 26-13 in their first 39 appearances.  As they seek their 27th World Championship against the hungry Phillies it is difficult for them not to reflect on history.

For the latest playoff odds check Baseball betting

Legendary baseball royalty has adorned the Yankee pin stripes with pride from Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle.  Today it is Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.  The immortal Yankees ghosts of World Series past will inevitably infiltrate the new 1.5 billion dollar stadium to cheer their descendants in spirit.

The Yankees won their last World Series Championship in 2000.  They made it back in 2001 and 2003 only to suffer defeat.  Over the last 5 years the organization has invested over a billion dollars into recreating the legend.  It appears that their money was well spent.  The Yankees are -190 on the money line to win their 27th Championship.

It is going to be a hard fought series for sure.  If the bats stay hot for the Yankees and the pitching remains strong from the likes of C.C. Sabathia the Yanks could easily put a damper on the Phillies repeat aspirations.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Week 7 At A Glance

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews — Tags: — Will Curl @ 2:59 pm

The NFL weekend went pretty much as I expected.  I went (4-0) on the 4 toughest matchups of the week.  I was (11-3) overall with the Raiders and Bills pulling upsets to throw me off.  You just never know in the NFL.  Over the weekend a few more MVP defensive players were lost for the season.  The Cinncinati Bengals lost DE Antwan Odom with a torn Achilles’ tendon  injury.  Odom is the soul of the Bengal defense and he will be sorely missed.  The New York Jets lost nose tackle Kris Jenkins with a torn ACL.  The Jets misery continues.  Both teams lost over the weekend.

There are plenty of tough matchups coming up in Week 7.  Lets start with the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Steelers beat the hapless Browns by 13 on Sunday but the Vikings are not the Browns.  Viking QB Brett Farve has found the fountain of youth. However the Vikings were involved in a shootout with the Baltimore Ravens which they pulled out by the skin of their teeth.  I did not see the Viking defense of fable but a secondary that was hit and miss.  This game will be a shootout as well.  Both teams will struggle to run the ball and the game will be decided in the air.  The Steelers are favored by 4.  My pick:  Steelers 28-21

The Chicago Bears come off of their Sunday night loss to the Falcons and travel to Odomless Cinncinati.  Without Odom the Bengal defense will lack the heart it needs for victory.  Although the Bengals are favored by 1.5 points I pick the Bears to bounce back 23-17

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

The New Orleans Saints pounded the New York Giants into submission on Sunday and now travel on to Miami Dolphin country.  The Dolphins had a bye in Week 6 but have won 2 in a row.  The Saints are favored by 6.5 and I think that is gracious.  My pick:  Saints 35-14

The Atlanta Falcons are fresh off a victory over the Chicago Bears but this week are off to face the Dallas Cowboys.  The Falcons are a different team with QB Matt Ryan at the helm.  The Cowboys on the other hand are the same team with QB Tony Romo at the controls.  The Cowboys are favored in this one by 4 but I am going against the odds again.  I like:  Falcons 24-21

I will deliver the rest of my NFL picks for Week 7 later in the week.  So my toughest 4 picks in review are the Steelers, Saints, Bears and Falcons.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Best NFL Predictions For Week 6

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Tags: , — Will Curl @ 1:18 pm

Week 6 of the NFL season will be kicking off this weekend.  A few surprise teams have established their identities early but do they have enough fuel in the furnance to maintain their leads?

The Denver Broncos are one of those surprise teams and they take their 5-0 AFC West lead to the home of the division rivals San Diego Chargers who are 2-2.  This is one of those rare times when the odds are against a 5-0 team.  The Chargers are favored by 3 even though they lost to the Steelers in their last outing.  The Chargers can put points on the board but they do most of it trying to catch up.  I have to admit that the Broncos are playing consistent football right now.  I am calling for an upset here. (Yes Cody I am picking Denver)  My pick:  Broncos 17-14

The 5-0 NFC Central leading Minnesota Vikings go on the road to take on the Baltimore Ravens who are 3-2.  Everyone is calling this close.  The odds right now are the Vikings by 3.  The Vikings have the compete package this year.  The only question in most minds is how long can QB Brett Farve hold up.  I said it before training camp that if Farve went to the Vikings they would be hard to beat.  I stick with that prediction.  My pick:  Vikings 21-16

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

Another big game that most all calling close is the battle of the undefeated in New Orleans where the 5-0 NFC East leading New York Giants take on the 4-0 Saints who lead the NFC South.  The Saints are favored by 3.  The Giants are solid.  They play good defense, they run the ball well and QB Eli Manning has finally found his niche.  The Saint led by QB powerhouse Drew Brees can put a ton of points on the board very quickly.  My pick:  Saints 27-20

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

Finally we will talk about the Sunday night game between the 3-1 Chicago Bears and the 3-1 Atlanta Falcons.  Both are in second place in their respective divisions.  The Falcons are favored by 3.  As I have said many times in the past, I don’t pick the easy ones.  The Bears have been simply getting by.  They have averaged 25 points on offense but have given up almost 20.  The Falcons have averaged 25 on offense as well but given up only 15 against better teams.  The Falcons lost to New England while the Bears fell to Green Bay in the opener.  My pick:  Falcons 26-17

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

Those are the toughest match ups I see this week.  In addition I like the Chiefs over the Redskins, the Texans over the Bengals, Steelers over the Browns (sorry Jerry), the Jags over the Rams, Panthers over the Bucs, Packers over the Lions, Eagles over the Raiders, Seahawks over Cardinals, Jets over the Bills and the Patroits over the Titans.  Until we meet again may your betting get better and remember to always be a good sport.

NCAA Football Preview For October 17th, 2009

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NCAA Football — Tags: , — Will Curl @ 1:58 pm

The third Saturday in October is almost here and NCAA Football is in full swing.  No matter how good a team thinks they may be there comes a time when they have to put up or shut up.  That game when they have to prove to themselves and the country that they are the real deal.  A few of those games are set to kick off this weekend.

Is there a better place to start than the Red River Rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns?  Oklahoma is ranked #20 in the nation and are 3-2 this season but QB Sam Bradford was off for a month due to an injury.  He came back last week to throw for 389 yards against Baylor and believes that his offensive unit is geared for victory.  The Sooners on the other hand the Longhorns are ranked #3 and are undefeated.  So, who has more to prove?  The Longhorns are 3 point favorites this weekend with a moneyline of -165.  If the Sooners don’t self destruct this good be a doosey.

The #7 Ohio State Buckeyes are 5-1 this season and first in the Big 10.  The Purdue Boilermakers are 1-5.  The Buckeyes are 13.5 point favorites with a moneyline of -500.  The Buckeyes should win easily but they still have to prove that they can live up to the potential of their offense.

Two 4-1 teams face off this weekend when the #25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish host the #6 USC Trojans.  The Tojans are 10 point favorites here but the Fighting Irish can show that they deserve to be in contention by pulling an upset here.

Talk about proving something the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide are 6-0 this season under new head coach Nick Seban.  They host the #22 South Carolina Gamecocks who are 5-1 and coached by Steve Spurrier.  The Crimson Tide is a 17 point favorite here but the Gamecock defense says otherwise.  Seban has worked wonders in Alabama but this should be a good test for them.  Spurrier keeps saying the Gamecocks have yet to play to their full potential.  This good be the game.

Finally, the #1 Florida Gators and QB Tim Tebow host the 3-2 Arkansaw Razorbacks.  The 5-0 Gators are 24.4 point favorites in this one.  This one could be a nightmare for the Razorbacks.  Not much chance of a upset here.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Major League Baseball Championship Series

The Major League Baseball season is winding down but not without a bang.  The battle for both the American and National League Pennant is about to commence and the cool October breeze is starting to heat up like a sizzling hot summer day.

The divisional series are over and 3 of the 4 teams left swept their opponents in 3 games.  The New York Yankees silenced the Minnesota Twins before they could even start thinking about what it would be like to play in the World Series.  The Yankees have a long tradition of winning world championships.  From the days of Babe Ruth,  Mickey Mantle and  Reggie Jackson to the present day Jeter, Rodriguez and Pettite this team resignates tradition.  The last time the Yankees won the World Series was in 2000.  The money line of -167 says they will win it again this year.

For the latest playoff odds check Baseball betting

The Los Angeles Angels ran over the Boston Red Sox in 3 games and left them muttering “what the heck happened?”  You could have easily pictured a Yankee-Red Sox ALCS face off but the Angels had other ideals.  Although the odds are the Angels will fall to the mighty Yankees they may just have something to say about that as well.

The Los Angeles Dodgers stunned the St. Louis Cardinals in 3 games to return to the NLCS for the second year in a row.  To make it even sweeter they will get another crack at their opponents from last year the Philadelphia Phillies who went on to win last years World Series.  For Joe Torre, Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, there is something else that could sweeten the pie.  If they can beat the Phillies in the NLCS they could very likely meet the Yankees in the World Series.  The last Manager to win a World Series for the Yankees was the one and only Joe Torre.

For the latest playoff odds check Baseball betting

The only team not to sweep their divisional series was the Philadelphia Phillies but they did eliminate the Colorado Rockies in 4 games.  You would think that the Phillies would be favored after winning the World Series last year but the Dodgers are picked to win with the money line being -110.  The Phillies would like nothing better than a chance of winning 2 World Series in a row.

The odds are supporting a Los Angeles Dodger/New York Yankee World Series matchup.  Joe Torre managed the Yankees from 1996-2007 and won 10 divisional championships and 6 AL pennants and 4 world series.  He took over the reigns of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008.  A world series win over the New York Yankees could only add more luster to the amazing career of the 5th winningingest  coach in baseball history.   Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Week 5 Picks You Can Bet On

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Tags: , — Will Curl @ 4:56 pm

Week 5 will kick off in 2 days and there are some exciting matches to bet on this weekend.  You have heard me say it a thousand times but just about any NFL team can win on a given day.  However, the Rams make you wonder.  As you know I don’t waste my time or yours talking about the uneven matchups.  I go right for the gritty stuff.  Let’s jump headfirst into the gridiron pool that is Week 5 in the NFL.

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

The Bengals and the Ravens meet up in Baltimore for the battle for first place in the AFC North.  Although the Ravens are 8.5 point favorites here don’t be surprised if they blow this one out well beyond that.  The Ravens are a far better team then the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Bengals are improving but they struggled against the Cleveland Browns last week.  Give me a break.  I think Joe Flacco is going to have a field day here.  My Pick:  Ravens 28-10.

The Atlanta Falcons travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers.  San Francisco is favored by 2.5 points.  San Francisco is playing really tough this year and could win that division.  The Falcons stumbled against the Patriots but are a strong contender for a conference championship as well.  This one is not easy but my pick is:  Falcons 16-13

The New England Patriots take a trip to Denver to face off with the Broncos.  The Broncos are 4-0 and no one is more shocked than me, okay maybe the Broncos, but this one will not be as close as you might think.  The Broncos have yet to play anyone of substance.  They beat Dallas last week for the same reason most will, there is no organization in that offense.  This week they take on Tom Brady and company and even though Brady is not 100% he is still Tom Brady.  The Patriots will hand the Broncos more than their favored 3 point victory.  My pick:  Patriots 31-14.

For the latest playoff odds check NFL betting!

On Monday night the New York Jets go to Miami to take on the Dolphins.  I did not think this was going to be much of a match up a few weeks ago but it just may be.  The Jets fell to the Saints and Chad Henne instilled some life into the Dolphins as they surprised the Bills.  The Jets are a 2 point favorite.  This has crept up to being a pretty good match up but I am not sold on Chad Henne just yet.  I like the Jets to win this one 22-17.

That’s it for now so until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The MLB Playoff Picture

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, Betting Promotions, MLB Baseball — Will Curl @ 10:55 am

The MLB Playoffs are underway and the thrill of October baseball fills the air.  The excitement is already building, the anticipation, the hidden feeling down in he pit of your stomach that aches with desire to know if your team can prevail.  We all know in our own hearts who we want to win but who should we bet on?  The New York Yankees have 7-5 odds favorite to win the American League Pennant.  The Philadelphia Phillies have 7-5 odds to win the National League Pennant.  The New York Yankees are riding on 2-3 odds for winning the World Series.  Let’s take a look and see if these odds are holding up.

The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-2  in game 1 of the AL Championship series.  Derek Jeter smashed a home run and you could feel that legendary Yankee shiver go up and down your spine.  I am sure all of the famous ghosts from Yankees past walked across the street from their old home to watch the today’s Yankees play.  The Yankees are favored to win game 2 tomorrow night as well.

The Philedelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies in Game 1 by the score of 5-1.  AL Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee shut down the Rockies and at one point had retired 16 in a row.  The Phillies are predicted to win tonights game as well.

Don’t forget to place your bets on the MLB Playoffs at:

The Los Angeles Dodgers got by the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3.  The Dodgers utilized 5 relievers in their attempts to contain the Cardinals.  Both teams missed on excellent opportunities but the Dodgers found a way to win.  The St. Louis Cardinals are picked to win tonights game.  Many are predicting the Cards will make it all the way to the World Series.  The defending World Series Champ Phillies may have something to say about that.

Tonight the Boston Red Sox square off against the Los Angeles Angels in Game 1 of their series.  The Red Sox are favored to win game 1.  For the latest playoff odds check Baseball betting.

October seems to bring out the best and the worst in some players.  Some player live for that pressure while others cannot meet its demand.  As with all odds there are long shots and those that seem like a sure thing.  Of course every once in a while a team comes out of no where and bucks the system.  A team that plays with more heart than talent and somehow challenges the odds as they walk gallantly off into legend.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

NFL Week 4 In Review: October 5, 2009

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, NFL Football — Will Curl @ 11:08 am

Every week in the NFL seems to offer some kind of revalation to me a seasoned football enthusiast.  Week 4 of this NFL season was no different.  This week it was most satisfying to realize that smash mouth football was still evident in the National Football League.  The games were hard hitting and the war in the trenches was bloody and brutal and that was just between the cheerleaders.  It was a gridiron weekend to behold sprinkled with a few suddle surprises.

All those sports writers and analyzers of NFL prophecy who have been screaming at the top of their lungs that the Pittsburgh Steelers have a bad offensive line and no running game you can start pulling those crow feathers out of your mouth anytime.  Last night Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhal ran through the San Diego defense like a lawn mower over grass.  The offensive line was the true hero as they fought the trench war that allowed Big Ben to complete 26 of 33 passes and Mendenhal to rush for 165 yards on 29 carries.  The Steelers scored 28 points before the Chargers could say Sunday Night Football.  The final score was 38-28, which makes the score sound a lot closer than it was.  The Steelers improved to 2-2 at the quarter post of the season.

The Steelers gained a game on the Baltimore Ravens who lost a hard hitting game to the New England Patroits.  If Raven QB Joe Flacco was playing dodgeball half of his receivers would have been out of the game.  There was some big drops in that game for the Ravens.  Patroit QB Tom Brady is starting to find his stride and the Patroit defense stepped up for this one.  The Patroits did beat that 1.5 point spread and handed the Ravens their first lost of the year 27-21.

I was right when I predicted the Steelers and Patroits would win yesterday but I was wrong when I predicted the Jets would.  The Saints finally found a defense and the Jets realized their QB was actually a rookie.  The Saints won 24-10 and improved their record to 4-0.  The Jets fell to 3-1.  The Denver Broncos improved to 4-0 as they held off the Dallas Cowboys 17-10.  Are the Broncos for real?  The Broncos beat the Bengals in week 1 on a freak tipped ball in the final seconds and defeated the helpless Browns in Week 2.  In week 3 they walked over the just as helpless Raiders.  Yesterday they pulled one out against the Cowboys who are faltering on offense.  I don’t think the Broncos are the real deal.  Their next 4 games will make them or break them as they take on the Patroits, Chargers, Ravens and Steelers.  If they win those 4 games they will make me a believer.

The Lions and the Browns showed some sign of life yesterday but came up empty.  The Lions lost to Chicago 48-24 and the Browns fell to the Bengals 23-20 in overtime.  The Colts are on a roll once again and handed the Seahawks a loss 34-17.  Tonight the Minnesota Viking host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.  Vikings QB Brett Farve hosts his old team and what he really wants to do is roast them.  It should be brutal but fun.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sportsbook Gazette Weekly Sports Roundup

Another weekend of sports action is here again and there will be a lot of athletes with sore bodies come Monday.  The Major League Baseball season is winding down and the National Football League is just heating up.  The NCAA Football season is on fire as well.  If you squint your eyes you can see the NBA season in the distance.  Yes, there is plenty of sports for any enthusiast and plenty of opportunity to make a little wager.  There is plenty to talk about so hold on tight it could get a little rough.

The MLB playoff picture is close to developing and it is going to be fun.  The New York Yankees are the winningest team in baseball this year with 102 wins.  They have clinched the American League East with the Boston Red Sox clinching a wild card spot right behind them.  In the AL Central the Detroit Tigers need to win 2 games to clinch.  The Los Angeles Angels have already clinched the AL West.  Last years Champions the Philedelphia Phillies have already clinched the NL East and the St. Louis Cardinals the NL Central.  In the NL West the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched with the Colorado Rockies taking in the wildcard.   Next week we will devote a day to sizing up the playoff picture.

Just a reminder that I picked the Patroits over the Raven, the Jets over the Saints, the Steelers over the Chargers and the Vikings over the Packers in Week 4 of the NFL.  I will also take the Dallas Cowboys over the Denver Broncos and the Tennesee Titans will pick up their first win over the Jacksonville Jaquars.  By the way Brett Farve injured his foot but he is up and moving around fine and should start his 273rd straight game on Monday night against the Packers.

In NCAA Football number 1 Florida is off until next weekend when they face LSU.  Number 2 Texas is also off until next week when they will face Colorado.  Number 3 Alabama is at Kentucky and should pull this one out with no problem.  Number 4 LSU is at Number 18 Georgia.  This will be a tough game but LSU should come away with a victory.  Number 5 Boise St is hosting UC Davis so what do you think?  Number 6 Va Tech is at Duke and they are not playing basketball folks.  Number 7 USC is playing Number 24 California who got stunned 42-3 last week.  It won’t get much better this Saturday.  Number 8 Oklahoma will be at Number 17 Miami of Florida.  Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford will not be starting.  That’s not good.  Could be an upset in the making.  Number 9 Ohio State will be at Indiana.  The Buckeyes have shutout their last 2 opponents.  Could Indiana be number 3?  I think so.  Finally Number 10 Cinncinati takes a short road trip to Miami of Ohio.  Cinncinati should not have a problem.

Just a few notes of interest.  In Golf Tiger Woods won the FedEX Cup last week and took home the ten million dollar prize.  That put Tiger over the Billion dollar earnings mark in his career.  That is right 1 Billion dollars.  In Tennis Rafael Nadal has been cleared to play again and will participate in Spain’s Davis Cup in December.  Andy Murray on the other hand has dropped out of the Japan Open due to a wrist injury.  Well that is it for this week folks.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.
