Soccer - Liverpool Eliminates Inter Milan

Liverpool took out Inter Milan on Tuesday in the Soccer Betting Champions League, winning the second leg 1-0 and completing the sweep of the Italian team.  With their victory they join three other English teams in the Champions League quarterfinals. Liverpool won the title three years ago against AC Milan.

Liverpool was not expected to win against Inter Milan who leads the Serie A League. It was expected that Manchester United would win against Lyon and they did.  Chelsea didn’t have much trouble with Olympiakos and Arsenal defeated the defending champion, AC Milan.  Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said that the Premier League is the best soccer league in the world. “I think the Premier League is the strongest in Europe,” he said, “For a spell it was the Spanish league. I remember about seven or eight years ago they had three teams in the semifinals and Spanish football was really strong, but I think the English game has now reached that level. You expect three of the four English teams to be in the semifinals this year, unless they are drawn against each other (in the quarterfinals). We now have a 40 percent chance of being drawn against an English team, which is a measure of the quality of this division.” Soccer Betting at SBG Global.

Since 1984 the only English teams to win the Champions League have been Liverpool and Manchester United.  English teams used to win the competition every year but that ended in 1985 when the UEFA said its teams couldn’t compete.  That changed in 1990 but the English success has been rare in the Champions League since that time.  The trend looks to have changed again with four English teams in this year’s quarterfinals.  The odds are high that an English club will win it all and it is possible it could be an all-English final.  The draw for the quarterfinals will be on Friday.  There has never been an all-English final in the Champions League.  The Final will be played in Moscow on May 21st.

The teams that are trying to prevent the English clubs from making it to the final are AS Roma, Fenerbahce, Barcelona and Schalke.  The two teams that seem to have the best chance of that group are Barcelona who is eight points behind Real Madrid in the Spanish League and Roma who is six points behind Inter Milan in Serie A.

Fenerbahce and Schlake were fortunate to advance this far and it would be a major surprise to see either reach the semifinals. “When all four English teams reach the last eight of the Champions League, it means our game is one of the best in the world,” Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez said, “It is the power of the Premier League and it shows that our top four teams are maybe the best in Europe. That much is clear and no one can say any different. There are so many really good players in all four sides. It would be great to see two English teams in the final.”
