Did The Heat Just Purchase A Future Championship?
On July 8th LeBron James announced live on ESPN that he was leaving the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers for South Beach and Pat Rileys Miami Heat. LeBron decided to join the Heat with two of his friends; in what he hopes is the key to the NBA Championship that has been just out of his reach.
The media is having a field day with this one. The city of Akron, Ohio could very well disown their home town hero; if they think continue to believe he deserted them. In an area where people placed James one step below a God; anything could happen.
Obviously, Cleveland Owner Dan Gilbert is less than happy. He found out a few minutes before James announcement aired that he was losing his star; but in reality, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. LeBron was not happy in Cleveland.
There will be mixed opinions on this move for decades. With former Olympic team mates Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade waiting for him in Miami; James was drawn to join the trio in hopes of that Championship Dream, and of course a few extra dollars as well.
Pat Riley, the President of the Miami Heat, already has 5 Championship rings and he would like to add a few more before his Hall of Fame career is over. Now, in a move that would make even the New York Yankees blush, Riley has assembled a team that can do it.
Being a Ohio boy myself; I also have mixed feelings about LeBron and the move to Miami. For whatever reason, Cleveland did not win a Championship with LeBron. Perhaps there is blame for that on both sides; or maybe they just were not good enough as a team.
There is very little loyalty in sports today. It is a business and it is all about making money. For that reason, I cannot fault LeBron for making the move he thought was right for him. Do I think Miami just bought a future Championship? I don’t believe that is guaranteed. Talent alone does not always bring a ring.
Miami has certainly provided themselves with a competitive edge. It was a great move for the franchise; if it pays off. I don’t know that the Lakers are shaking in their shoes. I would not bet on it. Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.
