Spain Wins Their First World Cup

Spain completed their 4th shut out in a row Sunday.  They extended a run of four 1-0 victories as they beat Holland in the 116th minute for the World Cup Championship in South Africa.

Spain’s Andres Iniesta ripped the ball hard to the right of Holland’s outstanding goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg for the kick heard round the world by an estimated 230 million people.

I must admit that I thought Holland would win by the same score.  They were competitive and they drew 8 yellow cards in the hard fought battle but in the end Spain simply wanted it a little more.

It was Spain’s first ever World Cup.  The Spanish people have waited a long time for this celebration and it will no doubt go on for some time to come.  The next World Cup will be held in Brazil in 2014.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup Final 4. How Will They Stack Up?

Today Germany and Uruguay face off in the Third Place Playoff Match in South Africa.  I had picked Germany to defeat Spain and move onto the final.  Spain suppressed the young German team and defeated them 1-0.  Spain has now won 3 games in a row by a 1-0 score.

Now Germany must try to save face after eliminating powerhouse foes Australia, England, and Argentina by hefty scores.  Germany scored 4 goals each in those games.  Hats off to Spain for finding a way to silence that offense.  The question today seems to be; how will this young German squad bounce back from such a devastating loss.

Keep in mind that Germany was without Thomas Mueller(4 goals) against Spain.  This was obviously a setback.  German striker Miroslav Klose will be trying to tie Ronaldo’s World Cup Record of 15 goals in what could be Klose’s last World Cup appearance.

Uruguay suffered a 3-2 loss to Holland in the semi-finals.  Now they will finish either third or forth in the tournament.  That is not too bad for a team that was last to qualify of the 32 teams in the tournament.  Today they will play with pride; for the feat they have accomplished.  No one but Uruguay expected to see their team in the final 4.

Today the odds are naturally in the young German teams favor.  They will have to wait for the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014 to win a final; but today they can loosen up and take home a Third Place finish.  My pick: Germany 2-1.

Tomorrow is the finale.  Holland and Spain battle it out for the 2010 World Cup Championship.  Many expected Spain to be there; but few thought Holland could survive the competition.  Spain is known for their stingy defense; giving up only 2 goals in 6 matches.  Remember, they lost their opening game to the Swiss 1-0. Chili is the only other team to manage a goal against them.

Spain is highly favored in tomorrows game.  Holland has been a breath of fresh air in the tournament and have played very well; especially with their 2-1 victory over final favorite Brazil.  Spain is the best passing team in the World.  They will put the Holland defense to the test.  Ball control will be the key to victory.  I am going to reverse the coin on Spain tomorrow.  I think Holland will upset the favorites 1-0.  Until we meet again, may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Who Is The Best Bet To Win The World Cup?

The World Cup Tournament in South Africa is winding down.  The Netherlands are already waiting for their opponent for the game on Sunday, July 11th to see who will take home the Cup.

The Netherlands shocked the world when they brought down powerhouse Brazil 2-1 in the quarter finals.  The Netherlands are for real and have earned their spot in the World Cup finale.  The Netherlands also defeated Uruguay and sent them into the Third Place game to be played on Saturday, July 10th.

In a few hours Germany will kickoff against Spain in what should be a dandy of a match.  The winner of this game will square off against the Netherlands for the Cup.  The loser will play Uruguay for Third Place.

Germany should beat Spain today and move on the the finale.  They will beat Spain by a goal and send them to the Third Place game.  Although the Netherlands are favored; I believe that Germany will win the World Cup.  The latest odds have Netherlands at 2.52, Spain at 3.25 and Germany at 3.30.  I believe it will finish Germany, Netherlands, and Spain respectively.

The Netherlands have played very well throughout the tournament but Germany has also played well and have shown some offensive power.  The Netherlands have shown great defense but I can’t help but see an upset in the making.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup Quarter Final Match Ups

On Friday, July 2, 2010 the World Cup Quarter finals begin.  There have been some surprises thus far; but as usual the South American Countries have competed quite well. The first match up has power house Brazil facing off with the Netherlands.  Brazil is picked to win the cup and are carrying 5/2 odds.  The Netherlands have 7/1 odds themselves.  Brazil should win this one 3-1.

The second match up in the final 8 will be Ghana and Uruguay.  Ghana is carrying 33/1 odds of winning the cup; while Uruguay has 14/1 odds.  Although many predict a tie here; Uruguay is favored and should win 3-2.

Another power house, Argentina, squares off against Germany on Saturday morning.  Germany has 7/1 odds and Argentina 7/2 odds of winning the cup.  Some believe whoever is victorious here may go all the way.  Many are going with the South American dominance here; but I think Germany will prevail again and win this one 2-1.

The second game on Sunday places Paraguay against Spain.  Spain was carrying 9/2 odds to win it all; while Paraguay has 33/1.  You have to like Spain in this one.  They have played well and their defense has been tough.  I like Spain here 2-0.  There is going to be some great games in the Quarter Finals.  Place your bets now! Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup Round of 16 Begins Saturday

The final 16 teams are set to square off beginning tomorrow in South Africa to see who will win the World Cup of Soccer on July 11th.  Let’s take a look at Soccer’s Sweet 16.

Game 1 tomorrow pits Uruguay and South Korea.  Uruguay has not made it this far in the tournament in two decades and are hunting for their first quarter final visit in four.  Uruguay is favored in this one and should win by a goal.

In game 2 tomorrow the United States takes on Ghana.  The USA won their group for the first time in 80 years and now stand just 3 wins away from the World Cup.  The USA will beat Ghana tomorrow 2-0 and advance to the Quarter Finals.  However, the USA is still a 46-1 long shot to win the cup.

On Sunday Germany squares off against England in what is sure to be a knockout fight to the finish.  Germany last won the cup 20 years ago and England in 1966.  Neither are favored to win it this year but these two teams love to play one another.  England will win 2-1.

In Sundays second game Argentina is set against Mexico.  Argentina is a powerhouse and Mexico is playing with a lot of heart.  Argentina is favored to win this one but Mexico will not go down without a fight.  Argentina 3-2.

On Monday the Netherlands face off against Slovakia in what should be a good contest.  Look for the Netherlands to win this one 1-0 in the closing moments.

The second game on Monday pits Brazil against Chile.  Brazil is the favorite to win the cup and look for them to win this match 3-2.

On Tuesday Paraguay confronts Japan in the first game.  Japan has been playing tough and I look for them to surprise Paraguay with a 1-0 victory.

In the final game of Soccer’s sweet 16 two powerhouses face off with Spain taking on Portugal.  Portugal played cup favorite Brazil to a 0-0 tie and will defeat Spain 1-0.

Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

World Cup Soccer On Friday June 18, 2010

The World Cup is rolling right along with many teams finding the net on a regular basis and others not coming close.  Looking back at yesterdays games Argentina beat South Korea 4-1 in a game that I thought would be a little closer.  In game 2 Greece defeated Nigeria 2-1.  In the final game yesterday Mexico dominated France 2-0.

In today’s first game Serbia stopped Germany 1-0.  It is half time in game 2 with Slovenia leading the United States 2-0.  Slovenia is yet to allow a goal in the World Cup this week.  The USA will have to play their best soccer ever if they hope to come back in this one.

The final game of today will match England against Algeria.  This should be a good one with England winning by a goal.  Tomorrow my picks are the Netherlands, Australia in an upset and Denmark.

I have to mention today that last night; the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA Finals 83-79 to win their 16th World Championship.  It gave  Kobe Bryant his 5th Championship ring; still 2 behind the legendary Michael Jordan.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup In Review As Of June 16th

The World Cup kicked off in South Africa on June 11th and the competition has been fierce.  The fun began with South Africa facing Mexico.  It was a battle and when the dust cleared the match ended in a 1-1 tie.  South Africa had to feel victorious.  In the second game Uruguay took on France.  Either both teams displayed excellent offense or neither had an offense; the score ended up at a 0-0 tie.

On June 12th South Korea walked over Greece 2-0.  This was followed by a 1-0 victory for Argentina over Nigeria.  The 3rd game was a very much anticipated match up between the United States and England.  The USA played England to a 1-1 tie which left the Americans elated; England was obviously favored to win.

On Sunday Slovenia beat Algeria 1-0 and Ghana defeated Serbia 1-0 as well.  In the third game Germany proved to be too much for an Australian team that played with heart but could not put it all together in a 4-0 loss.

On Monday the Netherlands handed Denmark a 2-0 trouncing.  Then Japan slid by Cameroon 1-0 in the second match.  The much touted Italy team ended up in a 1-1 tie with Paraguay.  Italy’s stopper suffered a back injury that will certainly effect their opportunities.

On Tuesday New Zealand and Slovakia battled to a 1-1 tie in the first match up.  In the second match the Ivory Coast and Portugal failed to find the net in a 0-0 tie.  In the third match Brazil handed North Korea a 2-1 beating.

Earlier today Chili over came Honduras 1-0 in the first game.  In the second game Switzerland shocked Spain with a 1-0 victory that raised some eyebrows.  This afternoon South Africa will take on Uruguay in what could be a dandy match up.

In the next few days some of the key match ups will be South Korea and Argentina tomorrow.  Look for the South Koreans to prevail.  On Friday the USA takes on another powerhouse in Slovenia.  Slovenia is obviously favored and the USA will have to reach down deep inside themselves for a win here.  Also watch for the Netherlands and Japan and Australia and Ghana on Saturday.

The World Cup is in full swing.  The competition will get better as the less predominant fall to the wayside; you can bet on that.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup Kicks Off Tomorrow!

The World Cup kicks off tomorrow as the host country South African battles Mexico.  Although the host country has always won the opening game; South African has never advanced beyond the first round and their chances do not look to good tomorrow.

South Africa’s defense tends to be questionable and Mexico will work hard to expose it.  I fear that South Africa will need another “Invictus” if they hope to get anywhere in this tournament.  However, that is what I like about the World Cup.

The World Cup is like the Olympics.  The games become a part of national pride.  People of all ages; regardless if they are soccer fans or not,  stand up and take notice.  They find themselves pulling for that insurmountable possibility that their nations team may just accomplish the improbable.

The players in the World Cup competition; win or lose, play with all of their hearts and souls.  They play for their love of the game; for the opportunity of lifting that big gold trophy that proclaims their blood, sweat and tears were not induced in vain

As the World Cup kicks off tomorrow at 10am South African time; a global audience will take notice.  Royalty, Presidents and Prime Ministers will lend a watchful eye.  There is no better bet placed; then on the power of the human spirit that readily reminds us that anything can happen on a given day.  That day could be tomorrow in Johannesburg, South Africa. Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The World Cup Kicks Off On June 11th

On June 11th the World Cup will kick off in South Africa.  The world is watching as the best soccer teams on the globe prepare for battle.  There are 32 teams in the hunt but only 1 can take home the world cup title.  Let’s take a look at some of the opening match ups.

The World Cup kicks off with the host team South Africa facing Mexico.  Both teams are typically ranked in the top 20.  As Bafana Bafana goes; so goes South Africa and they should win this one by a goal.

The other match up on June 11th is Uruguay against France.  France is normally picked in the top 10 and should win this one easily.  There are rumors that France will not last very long but they could surprise.

On June 12th it is England confronting the United States.  What a match up! Even with Team Captain Rio Ferdinand out injured; England is still packed with talent.  The United States is still seeking a star for the ages and will have to make their mark with heart and true grit.   Look for England to prevail here.

On June 13th it will be Germany squaring off against Australia.  Germany is a tough team and are set to reap havoc but the Aussies are spirited, much like the United States, and could stun the world.  The odds are in Germany’s favor.

The defending Champion Italy have 14-1 odds of repeating.  Teams that are heavily favored to win the tournament are Spain with 4-1 odds, Brazil with 5-1 and England 6-1 odds.  There are always a few surprises in the World Cup and this year will be no different.  You can bet on that.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sports Book Gazette Weekly Sports Roundup!

On Wednesday the United States soccer team faced a powerful foe in Spain in the Confedertions Cup semi-final in South Africa.  The United States could have been in awe of Spains 35 game winning streak.  During that period the Spanish team only allowed 11 goals to be scored against them.  On Wednesday the United States soccer team managed to get 2 and that was 1 more than they needed as they ended Spains winning streak with a 2-0 victory.  Now the United States is in the final against another soccer giant in the Brazilian team.  Can they pull 2 major upsets off in a row?

In NBA news Hedo Turkoglu has opted out of his conract with the Orlando Magic.  Turkoglu was due 7.3 million dollars next year but his hoping for a long term contract that would pay him 10 million per year.  Orlando will find it hard to pay that amount since they acquired Vince Carter from the New Jersey Nets the day before.  Turkoglu averaged almost 17 points per game this season and was a major factor in the Magics run to the NBA Finals.  Cleveland fans got something to cheer about as Shaquille O’Neal was traded to the Cavaliers on Thursday.  Shaq has made a pretty good career by teaming with superstars.  He won 3 NBA titles with Kobe Bryant and one with Dwayne Wade.  Now he has the opportunity to play with LeBron James.  Is another NBA title in his future?

At Wimbledon Roger Federer managed to lose a set to 27th ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber but hung on to win and move on to face Roger Soderling on Monday.  Federer is chasing his record breaking 15th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.  The chase will get just a little tougher on Monday.  On the ladies side Serena Williams was late for her match against Roberta Vinci of Italy.  The American won fairly easily to move on to play Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

The issue of steroid use in Major League Baseball has been heavily covered for the past few years.  Today the Chicago Sports Writers Association voted to not allow any new guidelines when it comes to voting players to the Hall Of Fame if they have used steroids.  Some of the bigger names who have been in the steroid using limelight is Barry Bonds, Roger Clemons, Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez and Mark McGwire.  One of the categories for determining your vote is on character.  This issue has been highly debated.  If performance enhancing drugs made you better than you would have normally been should you get elected to the Hall?  It is my personal opinion that it still takes a very special core of athletic ability to be a superstar.  If you gave any player in the Major Leagues steroids could they break Hank Aarons home run record?  I don’t think so.  The ability has to be there or not.  Would Pete Rose have gotten twice as many hits had he of used steriods? I don’t think so.  These are great baseball players who were great long before they took performance enhancing drugs.  To error is human, to forgive is devine.  These players deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.  Until we meet again good betting and remember to always be a good sport.
