No “Rocky” in the UFC and The NFL is Back!

Last night the UFC Middleweight Champion of the World got beaten half to death for 22 minutes of a 25 minutes fight until his miracle move saved him.  Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva hardly looked like the pound for pound best UFC fighter most writers hype him up to be.  Chael Sonnen spent the first 4 rounds reminding us all of  “Rocky” but in the end Silva looked like “Kid Galahad”; when within 110 seconds of losing his title; a convenient submission ended the Rocky theme.  It was a fight to behold.

I cannot tell you enough how happy I am the NFL preseason begins tonight.  The Cincinnati Bengals take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.  Although it is only preseason and all is for not; it will be good to see the players take the field again.  The actual football season kicks off in around 4 weeks but there is going to be plenty of preseason pigskin action to entice us until then.

Tonight Terrel Owens fans should catch a glimpse of him in his new Bengal uniform.  Preseason or not; he would love to catch one against his former Cowboy team.  The Bengals think Owens is the missing piece to their puzzle.  After all, he was the missing piece in Philly, Dallas, and Buffalo too, or was he?

The Cowboys want the Super Bowl this year because it is being played in Dallas.  They have been building for years; maybe this one will be it.  Needless to say it will be interesting to see if these two teams live up to their own expectations as well as those of their fans.  One thing for sure it is going to be a great season and that is something you can bet on.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Silva and Sonnen Will Collide in UFC 117

On Saturday August 7th, Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will face off in the main event of UFC 117.  Silva has been terrorizing the UFC Middleweight ranks for years now.  His mixed martial arts record is 26-4 but he is 11-0 in the UFC.

Anderson Silva has been blasted by UFC President Dana White for not performing like a true Champion in his last few fights.  If this has phased Silva; he has not displayed it.  Of course Silva has someone else badgering him right now; his challenger on Saturday night.

Chael Sonnen has a mixed martial arts record of 24-10-1 and is 4-3 in UFC match ups but you would not believe that by the hype he is delivering.  Sonnen has belittled the Champ at every turn.  He has even threatened to beat Silva so badly he will force him into retirement.

Sonnen claims that Silva has been ducking him for years but says on Saturday night he will have no where to run.  I am not a huge Silva fan, although he no doubt a very talented athlete.  However, if you are going to batter the Champ; you better be prepared to back it up in the octagon.

Anderson Silva has not joined Sonnen in the hype game.  The champ says the fight will be decided in the octagon.  Silva cannot afford to dance around the ring in this fight and settle for a decision.  The UFC is built around entertainment.  The competition is real but only as exciting as the fighters allow it to be.

Sonnen is typically the type of fighter who will not let you dance around for long.  He usually applies constant pressure until he gets to you or you get to him.  I applaud Sonnen for talking a big game but I am not sure it is to build his own confidence or if he really thinks he can get into the Champs head.  I don’t see Silva losing the Championship on Saturday night but stranger things have happened.  It should be a good fight and that is something you can bet upon.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Sports Betting News – News That’s On Fire!

Tomorrow night is Mixed Martial Arts night on CBS as Strikeforce brings the much anticipated bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers.  From Russia, Fedor Emelianenko is considered to be the best mixed martial artist in the world.  Brett Rogers on the other hand was changing tires in Minnesota a few years ago.  Rogers is the underdog but he can cement his place in history if he can find a way to beat Emelianenko Saturday night. More at UFC Betting!

The New York Yankees won their 27th World Series Wednesday night in their 40th appearance.  It was the first for the most famous MLB dynasty in their new stadium.  The Philadelphia Phillies put up a fight but the franchise with too many bucks to spend could not be subdued this time around. These Bronx Bombers are truly the best team money can buy.

The HSBC  Champions Golf event is well underway in Shanghai and Tiger Woods is edging close to a match up with Phil Mickelson  once again.  The front 9 consists of 7 Americans and until Friday no one was really making a run.  Tiger Woods took advantage of that and shot to the forefront with Nick Watney.  This World Golf Championship will be the last of the season.

Last year the Pittsburgh Penguins surprised the Hockey world by winning the Championship and this year they are off to a 12-4 start.  They did get clipped by the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night 5-2 but they are still looking like a serious challenger for another run at the Stanley Cup.

On Monday night the NCAA Basketball season kicks off.  Last years National Champions the North Carolina Tarheels open up at home against Florida International.  They begin this season ranked #6 perhaps because they no longer have Tyler Hansbrough to lean upon.  The #16 Ohio State Buckeys open up the same night hosting the Alcorn State Braves.  Kansas starts out the year at #1 and they open their season next Friday.

The Duke Blue Devils begin their year next Friday as well and begin the season ranked #9.  The NBA season is less than 10 games into a long season but the Boston Celtics are 6-0 and are in the front of the Eastern Conference while the Denver Nuggets are 5-0 and lead the Western Conference.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sportsbook Gazette Weekly Sports Roundup!

In Akron, Ohio at the Bridgestone Invitational Tiger Woods trails Padraig Harrington by three strokes.  Harrington was feeling pretty comfortable until he looked up at the scoreboard and realized that Tiger was in second place.  Tiger has been almost unbeatable at Firestone and Harrington is well aware of it.  Harrington wanted to have the best lead possible going into Sunday but he knows there may not be a safe lead over the number one golfer in the world.  Tomorrow should really be interesting.  Tiger has won 6 out of 10 times playing at Firestone and he would like to make it 7 of 11.  Harrington and Woods will be paired up in the same group and it should be a great finish.

UFC 101 is about to begin and there are some pretty good matches tonight.  B.J. Penn is taking on Kenny Florian and is the favorite to win.  Anderson Silva is facing Forrest Griffin and is a huge favorite to win this one.  Johny Hendricks is set to battle Amir Sadollah with Sadollah picked to win.  There are quite a few less known contests but the Penn fight and Silva fight will get all the attention.  Anderson Silva should beat Griffin as long as he does not get to cocky and Penn should have no real problem with Kenny Florian but as with any competition you just don’t know until it is over.

The College Football polls came out today with a list of the top ten NCAA teams in the country.  The list goes as follows:  Florida at number 1, Texas at number 2, Oklahoma at number 3 and USC at number 4.  Alabama rounded out the top 5.  Ohio State came in at number 6 with Virginia Tech at number 7.  Number 8 was Penn State with LSU and Mississippi rounded out the top ten.  It is going to be another great NCAA Football season.

In the NFL the Hall of Fame Game will be played on Sunday between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans.  This event kicks off the NFL preseason and I can feel the excitement building.  The NFL season is upon us again and it should be a lot of fun.  There are going to be some great match ups and we will keep you posted on them all season long.  There may be some surprises in the NFL this year like Arizona in 2008.  Betters be ready because it is going to be a great season.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and may you always remember to be a good sport.

UFC 101 Silva Takes On Griffin

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is becoming more popular each and everyday.  Mixed martial arts contests have been going on for many decades but the UFC has taken it to an entirely different level.  In my youth I was a Bruce Lee fan and to this day I have still yet to see a mixed martial artist of his caliber but the UFC could have come from his own imagination.

The UFC pitts two competitors against each other inside a cage.  The blood that spills in these fights is real.  The bruises and bumps are real and when someone is put in a choke hold the danger of them passing out is real.  There is nothing fake about the UFC.  When you watch these fights you know that most every fighter will enter that ring and fight with intensity and determination lacking in other areas.

UFC 101 on Saturday promises to be more of the same.  Middleweight Anderson Silva will take on Forrest Griffin in a fight that promises fireworks in dramatic fashion.  Griffin is a straight ahead fighter who does not back off and refuses to quit until you make him quit.  Silva has been a monster in the cage but appears to lose his intensity if a competitor does not show it as well.

He won’t have that problem with Forrest Griffin.  Forrest Griffin may very well lose this fight but it will not be for the lack of trying and that is where the UFC is different.  Just because you lose a fight does not mean you lack respect.  The fans love a good fight and they remember those who provided it for them win or lose.

Anderson Silva has a knee that loves to catch aggressive fighters coming in.  If Griffin can avoid that knee he stands a fair chance.  Anderson may be one of the best pound for pound fighters in the UFC and Griffin may have one of the biggest fighting hearts.

Griffin has a 16-5 record in the UFC but he is still very respected for his intensity.  Silva had to pack on 20 pounds to fight Griffin.  This should not take anything away from his dominate personality.  This fight will definately be a good one and that is why the UFC expects to pick up one million units for this pay per view fight.

Anderson Silva is going to be the favorite in this fight.  Griffin will find himself in a familiar underdog role.  Never the less when this contest begins sparks will fly and the fans will be on their feet and in the UFC anything is possible.  One thing you can almost certainly guarantee is that this fight will not go the distance.  This will be a slugfest.

Bet your money wisely on this one.  Expect the unexpected but you know where the odds lay in this one.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sportsbook Gazette Weekly Roundup!

Hello sports betting fans!  No matter how much good information you have the odds don’t always stack up.  At the British Open today two great players walked off the field after the 18th hole.  One of the golf pros was in and the other was out.  One became the oldest player to ever lead in a major while the other was a golf legend who failed to make the cut.  The British Open has been played for almost 150 years and it just goes to show that anything can happen.  So who were these two men headed in different directions on Friday.  The oldest player to lead in a major championship was Tom Watson and the legend going home was the number one golfer in the world, that’s right Tiger Woods.  It was only the 6th time in his career that he missed the cut.  Now Watson has a chance to win his 6th British Open Title.  The 59 year old won his first back in 1975; 5 months before Tiger was born.

In the NFL Brett Farve has informed the Minnesota Vikings that he will let them know if he can play by July 30, which is the first day of camp.  He had surgery on his throwing arm in May and has been trying to work his arm back into shape.  He has been practicing with a local high school team 3 days a week all summer and has now included Sunday’s as well.  There is a lot of controversy about Farve’s return after retiring once again.  He came out of retirement to play for the Jets last season.  The 39 year old Farve had a fairly good season through the first half but struggled some in the second.  Many are questioning his stamina.  The one thing they cannot question is his record.  Brett Farve is destined for the hall of fame and even at 39 he still has more than many of the Quarterbacks in the league.  Here is something you can bet on.  If Brett Farve goes to the Vikings; barring a major injury, the Vikings will win the NFC Central Division.  He does not have to be the Farve of old; all he has to do is control the game and hand it off to Adrian Peterson.  The defense will take care of the rest.

In September spike will begin airing UFC’s Ultimate Fighter 10.  This is where young mma fighters give it their all in hopes of winning contracts in the UFC.  This year however there will be an unusual contestant.  Dana White the UFC President has brought in Kimbo Slice of the Elite XC and Youtube fame to compete.  Kimbo lost his last match in the Elite XC when he was knocked out after only 14 seconds.  Kimbo Slice is a hugh heavyweight but his mma technique needs a ton of work.  He had drew enough attention that he could have went to Japan and made good money fighting exhibition fights but his passion is still to learn and compete in the UFC; the major leagues of the MMA.  Kimbo knows that his experience is lacking and he also knows that many of the younger contestants have been doing this for most of their lives.  The only thing that keeps him going is his will to learn, compete and accomplish what he set out to do.  Until we meet again may the betting be better and the odds go in your favor and remember always be a good sport.

Brock Lesnar Is The UFC Reigning Heavy Weight Champion!

If you were willing to fork over the money on Saturday night for the UFC 100 pay per view event than you witnessed Brock Lesnars complete destruction of Frank Mir.  This was their second match against one another.  Mir handed Lesnar his only loss when he got him to submit with a leg bar.  There was a lot of talk from both fighters prior to the championship bout.  Mir claimed that he did not respect Lesnar and that his punches resembled a little sister pulling your hair.  Saturday night he ate those words.  Lesnar became the new UFC badboy when he held Mir’s head in his large left hamhocks and continually landed huge right hands onto Mir’s head and face.  Mir kept giving his corner the thumbs up until he was knocked senseless.  Will the real Frank Mir please stand up.

The fight was stopped and Brock Lesnar still stood in Frank Mir’s face.  Brock used both hands to show the crowd in Frank Mir’s town of Las Vegas that he was number one.  Unfortunately he was not using the forefingers.  Regardless of whether or not Lesnar is only 4-1 or 40-1 he destroyed Frank Mir.  He avenged his loss and he did what he said he would do.  Rather he is popular or not makes no difference.  He will laugh all the way too the bank and will take his championship belt with him.  Sure the fans love their heros.  They love that good guy, the knight in shining armor or the cowboy in the white hat but every world needs it’s badboy as well.  There has to be someone for the fans to hate.  Someone they love to see get beat.  Brock Lesnar is that guy.

UFC fans will pay top dollar to see Brock Lesnar fall.  This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.  The question is who will make Lesnar fall.  Who can defeat him at this point?  There are those who believe that Fedor Emelianenko the mad Russian has the best opportunity.  He is 30-1 and has beaten two of the UFCs greatest champions fairly easily in Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski.  The problem is Fedor is signed with a rival promotions outfit.  The UFC fans have been waiting eagerly for his arrival but it is still yet to happen.  After the fight saturday night UFC President Dana White said it will happen and that the big fight between Lesnar and Fedor will become a reality eventually.

It is hard to say if Lesnar will remain the champion that long or not.  Chances are he will if he continues to work on his ground game and tightens up his game.  Like Lesnar or not he is the champion and will be around for a while.  He adds excitement to an laready extremely exciting sport.  He brings that badboy image with fire and smoke into the cage with vigor and passion.  He will fight in more pay per view events and everyone will reap the benefits.  The odds are in his favor.  Until we meet again good betting and remember to always be a good sport.

The Sportsbook Gazette Weekly Sports Round up!

It is hard to believe but the NFL season is right around the corner.  As usual during the off season Coaches were replaced and some big name players were traded to other teams.  Lets briefly look at what may lay ahead in the upcoming season.  In the AFC East watch out for Miami and Buffalo.  In the AFC North Indy and the Titans will fall out of contention and the Texans will make a surprise run.  In the AFC West San Diego should hold on but Kansas City is the team to watch.  In the AFC South the Steelers did a great job of keeping the nucleous of their Super Bowl winning team.  They should win their division but Baltimore will be a thorn in their side again.  In the NFC East eyes are on the Eagles but Dallas may still have something to say.  In the NFC North a lot will depend upon rather Brent Farve ends up with the Vikings.  Chicago should be a threat now that they have a Quarterback in Jay Cutler.  In the NFC South keep your eyes on the upstart Atlanta Falcons with Matt Ryan moving into his second year and having newly acquired Tony Gonzales. The NFC West is up in the air.  Arizona may still be the team to beat there but the Rams and 49ers have second year coaches that are fired up and hungry.  Both could easily make a run in that division.  We will have our precise picks as the season draws nearer.

In the Tennis world there is a lot of anticipation that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal may still have a chance to meet in the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada next month.  Nadal did not compete at Wimbledon due to a knee injury.  He should be ready to go for the Rogers Cup on August 8th.  Many tennis fans were foaming at the mouth in hopes of seeing the two superstars meet at Wimbledon but it was not too be and Federer ended up winning his 15th Grand Slam and 6th Wimbledon Championship.

In Golf Tiger Woods will visit Australia for the first time in 11 years when he participates in the Australian Masters in November.  Grandstand seats for this event are already selling out.  Woods did not fair well when he played in the 1996 Australian Open where he finished 12 strokes behind winner Greg Norman or in the 1997 Australian Masters where he finished 8th behind winner Peter Lonard.  However, eleven years have made quite a difference in Tiger Woods.  The Melbourne fans know this will be one of the few chances that they will get to see this Golf legend play.

In the UFC they are preparing for their biggest event in history tomorrow night in Las Vegas at UFC 100.  Brock Lesnar is being picked to defeat Frank Mir in their rematch that highlights the event.  Frank Mir won their initial meeting but Lesnar is a little better than he was then.  Georges St. Perrie is picked to beat his opponent Thiago Alves.  There are some exciting matchups on this card and there could be some upsets.  You can check out our lates odds right here at the Sportsbook Gazette.  Somethings in sports never change there will always be the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.  Until we meet again good betting and always remember to be a good sport.

UFC 100: Will Controversy Change The Odds?

There is some controversy about the UFC 100 MMA Event that is coming up on July 11th.  The UFC has been promoting this fight as the biggest UFC Event in history.  The UFC has shown amazing growth in the last 16 years.  The popularity of these MMA matches continues to grow feeding the undeniable thirst for raw combat that has long excited something deep down inside us.

The controversy stems from the fact that the UFC decided to place the Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir fight as the main attraction.  Many UFC fighters have spent years polishing their craft and have spilt many blood and tears to get to this competitive level.  Brock Lesnar, a former pro wrestler, comes into this fight with a 2-1 UFC record.  He has already lost to Frank Mir.  Even so Brock did win the Heavyweight Championship when he defeated Randy Contour.

Regardless of what many believe the fact remains that Brock Lesnar is a huge PPV draw and that will cause many fans to tune in and pay the big bucks to see if he can live up to this honor.  The Betting Online seems to show that Brock is slightly favored to win.  However, this fight is by no means a shoe in.

There are those who think Frank Mir got lucky in the first fight.  Still others think that Lesnar was given some kind of special treatment by getting to fight for a championship with a 1-1 record and very raw MMA experience.  Although Brock defeated Randy in the twilight of his career he still has much to prove to MMA fans.  You can visit now at http://www.sportsbookgazette.com/live_odds.php to see what is going on.

Many UFC enthusiasts thought that the fight between Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves should have been the main event.  St. Pierre has proven himself to be a true UFC champion and Alves is an excellent contender for Georges Welterweight Championship belt.  Although St. Pierre is heavily favored in this one don’t let the odds control your thinking.  Anything will be possible in this one.  In other fights Dan Henderson is favored over Michael Bisping in the middleweight division.  Stephan Bonnar is also heavily favored to beat Mark Coleman in the Light Heavyweight bout.

You can always get the best odds and picks right here at the Sportsbook Gazette.  Once you separate all the hype around UFC 100 there is no doubt some of these fights will be pure war.  However, determining if it rates as the biggest UFC event of all time, I don’t know if I would take those odds.  Until we meet again good betting and remember to always be a good sport.

UFC online betting increasing after UFC 98

Aficionados of Sports gambling are placing more frequent bets on UFC events including the show between Evans and Machida.

The two unbeaten fighters headlined UFC 98 betting odds at Event # 98 on Saturday at 10:00pm EST at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada as Rashad “Sugar” Evans faced Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. The co-main event was a long anticipated grudge match between Matt Hughes and Matt “The Terror” Serra that owns headliner status at any venue.

Professor X stepped in on short notice to take on Drew McFedries. Chael Sonnen looked to rebound from a loss in his UFC debut with a victory over Dan Miller. Sean Sherk looked to get back into the UFC lightweight title picture with a win over Frankie Edgar.

Rather long feeling out process in the first round with one meaningful exchange which Machida got the best of, the frequency of short exchanges picked up in the second until late when Machida landed a straight left putting Evans in trouble. Machida swarmed on him, got him against the cage and let loose putting Rashad’s lights out. What a great win for Machida. He was never in any trouble in the fight and proved that his unique style is superior to everyone he has faced.

By way of replacement, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton ”Rampage”, was to fight undefeated champion Evans but had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn jaw ligament that occurred during training. However, oddsmakers say Evans was not just talking hype when he stated, “I thought Lyoto was more deserving than Rampage anyway. He’s better.”

UFC betting online was at its finest when the cage door was shut for these two great fights on Saturday. It has been an increasing source of interest at online gambling sites, just as the sport has grown exponentially in the US.

While boxing continues to frustrate fans with disorganization and political maneuvering, ultimate fighting already draws far better among young adults, and is making inroads on gambling action.
