Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals host rookie quarterback Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Wild Card game on Saturday. Warner finished second in the NFL in passing yards with 4,583, throwing for a franchise-record 30 touchdowns this season. His counterpart, Matt Ryan threw for 3,440 yards and 16 touchdowns in his rookie season and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year.  Ryan got plenty of help this season as running back Michael Turner rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide averaged 31.2 points and 196.5 rushing yards per game this season but those numbers are likely to drop considering they will be missing left tackle, Andre Smith who is an All-American. Smith was suspended for violating team rules and will miss the game. His absence could be a problem considering running back Glen Coffee and quarterback John Parker Wilson need help to make plays. If Wilson gets time to throw he usually finds freshman Julio Jones who had 51 catches, 847 yards and four TDs thi season.

Sugar Bowl betting lines: Alabama - 9.5 , Total 44.5

Friday’s game could be a defensive struggle considering the Tide ranked third in the country, allowing 256.9 yards per game. Utah’s offense was 15th in the country in scoring at 37.4 points per game but they haven’t played a defense like Alabama’s. Utah’s defense was not that far behind Alabama’s, ranking 12th in the country in scoring defense at 17.3 points per game.

Utah and Alabama have never met in their history. Utah is 0-6 all-time against SEC teams.

The Miami Dolphins and  Chad Pennington are one victory away from winning the AFC East and it is only fitting that the game would be in New York against Pennington’s old team the New York Jets and against the quarterback who replaced him, Brett Favre. Two players who won’t be returning to Phoenix with the Giants are Pro Bowl ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora. Rod Marinelli won a Super Bowl ring as defensive line coach at Tampa Bay – success that earned him a shot as head coach of the Detroit Lions. The Bucs visit the Lions today, and Marinelli can’t wait to see them. Not just because he knows a lot of the players and coaches still in Tampa. The Bucs are one of the few teams Marinelli can beat. Marinelli is 10-31 with the Lions – and the wins include a 23-16 victory over the Bucs a year ago at Ford Field. The Lions are 0-10 this season. “Because of free agency, every week you’re probably facing someone that was either a team or a coach of yours,” Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks said. “So it will be fun – and no different than every other week. You just go out there and do your best to make sure that you prepare yourself to win.”

The Jets aren’t the only AFC East team facing a stiff challenge. Miami and New England both take 6-4 records into their rematch today. The Dolphins shocked the Patriots, 38-13, in New England in the third weekend of the season, unveiling the “Wildcat” formation with direct snaps to halfback Ronnie Brown. He rushed for 113 yards and four touchdowns that day and threw for a fifth score on an option pass. It’s safe to assume the Patriots will be better prepared for the Wildcat formation this time around. “Probably the toughest thing is tackling the guy who’s got the ball,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “They all run well. They break tackles, they make people miss in the open field, they’re fast, they’re quick and they have good balance. All three of those guys [Brown, Ricky Williams and Patrick Cobbs ] are tough to tackle.” …

It’s also a crucial week for the fourth team in the AFC East. The Buffalo Bills once sat atop the division with a 5-1 record. Thanks to a four-game losing streak, the Bills now reside at the bottom of the pack at 5-5. Buffalo has a chance to get back on the winning track today against the 1-9 Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills need to start winning soon. They are running out of time on the season. “We deserve to be where we are because we haven’t played well enough to win in the recent past,” Bills coach Dick Jauron said. “But we also deserve to be where we are because we definitely played well enough to win early. Without those early wins, we wouldn’t be sitting here at 5-5, thinking about the next game and playing for an opportunity.” …

The 6-4 Denver Broncos are rolling with a two-game road winning streak and a two-game lead over San Diego in the AFC West. But Denver has suffered two home losses already, which is out of character for the Broncos. Denver is home today against the 2-8 Raiders. This one is money in the bank for the Broncos. Since the Raiders fired him as their head coach in 1989, Mike Shanahan has posted a 20-6 record against Oakland as coach of the Broncos.
