Don’t Forget The Belmont Stakes On June 5

Filed under: Articles, Betting Previews, Horses — Tags: , , — Will Curl @ 9:50 am

On June 5, 2010 the 142nd running of the Belmont Stakes will take place in New York.  For many, this race may have slipped from their memory after the Preakness proved there would be no Triple Crown winner again this year.

Although the Kentucky Derby Winner, Super Saver, and the Preakness Winner, Lookin For Lucky, will not be present at Belmont; it does not mean that this race will not be interesting.  You might just be surprised.

Both of the second place finishers will be at the Belmont.  Ice Box finished second to Super Saver in the Derby and First Dude finished second to Lookin For Lucky in the Preakness.  Either of these horses could stand up and take the Belmont.  Both could also go on to be champions this year.

Don’t give up on the field just because there will be no Triple Crown Winner.  The Belmont will still be a race to appreciate; you can bet on that.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Pursuing Preakness Possibilities On May 15th

Baltimore, Maryland is buzzing as the weening hours leading up to this years Preakness, the second leg of the triple crown, as Super Saver remains cool and calm.  Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby as rider Calvin Borel won his 3rd Derby in a row.  Super Saver is in the famed #40 stall, which is reserved for only Triple Crown prospects.  Borel has already made the comment that Super Saver is the colt that could win the big three.

However, before Super Savor, the 5-2 favorite in the Preakness, gets to far ahead of himself he must outrun the field of 12 that will surround his 8th position at the gate.  For example, right next to Super Saver at the gate will be Lookin for Lucky in #7.  Lookin for Lucky was a 6-1 favorite at the Derby but wound up in the 6th spot.

Lookin for Lucky is a 3-1 favorite at the Preakness, second to only Super Saver.  In a last moment move to change their luck Lookin at Lucky Trainer Bob Baffert decided to switch riders.  Garrett Gomez is out and Martin Garcia is in.  Gomez will now be riding Dublin in the Preakness.  Ice Box, who finished second at the Derby will not participate in the Preakness; instead he is in preparation for the Belmont.

Jackson Bend is considered to be a threat Saturday as well.  It should be a fine field and fun to watch.  Look for all eyes to be on Super Saver but don’t be surprised if someone steals the lime light.  Until we meet again, may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Will Super Saver Be Super At May 15th Preakness?

Super Savor, who won the Kentucky Derby recently, will compete in the Preakness on May 15th on only 2 weeks rest.  His rider, Calvin Borel, has already predicted that Super Savor will win the Triple Crown.  The last horse to win the triple crown was Affirmed; who accomplished the amazing feat in 1978.

Calvin Borel knows a little about winning.  He won the Kentucky Derby 3 of the last 4 years; the first time it has ever been done.  Calvin has made it clear that Super Savor is only now peaking, and will run strong to win at both the Preakness and the Belmont.

Paddy O’Prado came in third at the Kentucky Derby but figures to compete well with Super Savor for the Preakness.  In addition, Lookin At Lucky, who was favored in the Derby, may be there as well.  There will be a little more room to wiggle around in the Preakness.  There were 20 horses in the Derby; there will only be 14 in the Preakness.

Calvin Borel and the Super horse, Super Saver, may or may not be destined for Triple Crown Glory.  The odds will be against them; but that is not unusual.  Super Saver still has the opportunity to race right into the hearts of horse racing fans everywhere.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Favorite In Saturday’s Kentucky Derby

‘Looking at Lucky’ is really looking to be lucky at Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.  Looking at Lucky has drawn 3-1 odds as well as the #1 post position, which is the most unsought after starting point.  A dozen horses have won the Derby from that very position but it has been almost a quarter century since ‘Ferdinand’ did it last.  It is to easy to get jammed to the inside from that position and every trainer and jockey knows that.

The runner up favorite is ‘Sidney’s Candy’ with 5-1 odds but unfortunately drew the 20th and last starting position on the outside.  Only 2 horses have won the Derby from that starting point; the last being ‘Big Brown’ only a few years ago.

‘Devil May Care’ is drawing 10-1 odds and is the third favorite.  In addition, she is a filly.  It is not often that you see a filly in the Kentucky Derby.  Two years ago ‘Eight Belles’ ran hard in the Derby and came in second.  Unfortunately she collapsed after the race and had to be put down.

Just as a point of interest; ‘homeboykris’ is carrying 50-1 odds in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.  Why a point of interest?  He is co-owned by Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Joe Torre.  This race will be a quick mile and a quarter and if Looking at Lucky can slide through the traffic jam early; he should take home the first leg of the triple crown.  Until we meet again; may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

2009 Preakness Stakes Odds favorite Rachel Alexandra

The 2009 Preakness Stakes on Saturday is all about the filly Rachel Alexandra. Forget about Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. The real story is the superstar filly that is 8-5 in morning line Preakness odds.

Rachel Alexandra has won five straight by dominating margins and nearly everyone believes she is a deserving favorite in Preakness odds on Saturday. She gets her normal jockey Calvin Borel who will not ride Mine That Bird. She does start from the outside in post position #13 but everyone seems to think that is an advantage, not a problem. ”It’s beautiful. She’s going to be able to get position,” said assistant trainer Scott Blasi.

Borel is the first jockey in Preakness history to get off of the Derby winner to ride another horse. ”Calvin knows this filly so well, I don’t think we have to tell him anything about where he wants to be with her,” Blasi said. ”He’s very comfortable with her and we’re very comfortable with him.”

A filly has not won the Preakness since Nellie Morse in 1924 and no filly has even been entered since Excellent Meeting in 1999. The last filly to be favored in Preakness betting was Winning Colors in 1988 at odds of 2-1.

The 2009 Preakness Stakes betting sets up for Rachel Alexandra and Big Drama (10-1) to fight for the early lead and the outside post should make it easier for Rachel Alexandra to get to the front. ”It’s a good spot for her,” said Bob Baffert, the trainer of Pioneerof the Nile, ”She’s out there in the clear. If you’re in the middle and you don’t break well, they can jam you up. She’s going to be (running) one, two or three; that’s a good spot for her.” Pioneerof the Nile who finished second in the Derby is the second betting choice in the Preakness at odds of 5-1. Mine That Bird and Kentucky Derby betting favorite Friesan Fire are 6-1.

Mine That Bird’s trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. is happy about his horse’s starting position in post #2. ”They should clear away from us, put us in a nice spot to coast down the front side,” he said. ”I like the fact that Big Drama is inside of me. He will move on. It should leave me a little bit of a spot there.” The rest of the Preakness field has Musket Man at 8-1, Papa Clem at 12-1, General Quarters at 20-1, Take the Points and Terrain at 30-1, Luv Gov, Tone It Down and Flying Private at 50-1.
