Clouded Glory: The Major League Baseball Steroid Debate

In about a month the 2010 Major League Baseball spring training process will begin.  In a locker room somewhere a rookie player will have fulfilled their life long dream of making it too the big show.  They will dawn their MLB uniform for the first time and a feeling of pride and satisfaction will over come them.  Each rookie will start off with grand expectations of becoming the next superstar to breathe life into the sport.  They will attempt to follow in the footsteps of the baseball legends that preceded them.  Well, hopefully not in all of their footsteps.

I grew up loving the game of baseball just like many a boy in love with his country, apple pie and his favorite hero on the diamond.  When I grew up in the 1960’s and 70’s my hero’s were the likes of Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose and since I was a Pittsburgh Pirate fan, Roberto Clemente.  As I grew older and began to raise a family of my own I jumped on the bandwagon of the new stars on the horizon in the 1990’s.

Major League Baseball had gone through some hard times but a bunch of guys with names like Sosa, Bonds, Canseco, Clemmens, A-Rod and McGwire were changing all that.  I had always regretted not being old enough to watch the home run race between Mantle and Maris but in 1998 I witnessed the battle between Sosa and McGwire.  I could not believe the home runs they were hitting with ease.  I thought I was experiencing something special, something huge and unbelievable.  Little did I know.

Rumors of steroid use in MLB were floating around since the 1980’s.  The performance enhancement drug was invading sports and could be pursued with ease.  Through the years more players than not avoided this drug.  Unfortunately there were those who felt a need to utilize it.  To make matters worse many of those players suspected were the one’s mentioned above.  Carried on the wind in many a baseball stadium were the famous words, “Say it ain’t So Joe, So it ain’t so”, from the 1919 Black Sox scandal involving Shoeless Joe Jackson and his team.

On Monday Mark McGwire finally admitted to using Steriods in 1998 when he broke the Roger Maris single season home run record by hitting 70 over the fence.  The record had stood for almost 4 decades.  McGwire had pleaded his innocence for years but finally relented.  Perhaps because he was just hired as the new hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The debate rages on and will continue to flourish for decades to come.  The question will always be there.  Did these performance enhancing drugs make these players in question better than they would have been?  The players say you either have the gift or not.  That drugs cannot enhance your eye and hand coordination.  The question persists, could a 10 home run a year hitter be turned into a 70 home run a year hitter with steroids?  I think not.

The steroid scandal has forever installed a dark cloud over the accomplishments of these players and any others who profited from it’s use.  Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s 755 career home run record.  That too may be forever tarnished.  All of these players involved will find it difficult to find a way into the Hall of Fame.  Many of them would have made it if not for the steroid use.  They breathed air into the beloved game of baseball when it needed it most and then they took it all away.

I cannot help but wonder what Babe Ruth and all of the great players that followed him would have said about the spectacle.  I take my hat off to the baseball legends who took their chances on raw talent and a lot of beer and hot dogs.  Perhaps every generation has a scandal of some sort.  The game has survived them however and the players who play the game honestly and with pride, perhaps those new rookies in this years spring training camp, will sustain baseball for the next generation of adoring fans.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

MLB Betting – Philadelphia Phillies vs. N.Y. Yankees

A great pitching matchup begins the World Series on Wednesday night as the New York Yankees host the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1. It will be Cliff Lee going for the Phillies while CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees. These former teammates have pitched extremely well during the postseason and each could get three starts in this series if it goes seven games.

The Yankees are a -163 favorite with a total of 7.5 at SBG Global.

Unlike past World Series matchups this one has everything. Each team has a premier ace pitcher, both teams have MVP sluggers and both teams can hit home runs. The teams met earlier this season for a series at Yankee Stadium and the Phillies took two of three.

The Phillies are trying to become the first team to repeat as World Series champs since the 1998-2000 Yankees, and the first team to do it in the National League since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees are well aware that it won’t be easy against the defending champs. “They’re the defending champs. They’re playing extremely well,” manager Joe Girardi said. “We know they’re an extremely tough opponent.”

The Yankees had the most wins in baseball betting this season and had little trouble getting past Minnesota and the Angels in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Alex Rodriguez has been superb in the postseason and Sabathia has been almost unhittable. On the other side, the Phillies got amazing pitching from Cliff Lee while Ryan Howard had 14 RBIs in nine games against Colorado and the Dodgers this postseason.

Wednesday’s game should be a great duel as Lee is 2-0 in three starts this postseason with a 0.74 ERA. Sabathia is 3-0 this postseason with a 1.19 ERA. The only thing that might prevent a pitcher’s duel is their career numbers. Sabathia is 1-2 with a 5.55 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies while Lee is 4-4 with a 5.02 ERA in nine career starts against New York. More on MLB Baseball Betting!

The Phillies are 8-3 in their last 11 games as a road underdog. The Phillies are 6-2 in Lee’s last 8 road starts. The Yankees are 41-10 in their last 51 home games. The Yankees are 10-1 in Sabathia’s last 11 starts as a home favorite.

Sports News You Can Bet On

The Phillies were not very good house guests last night when they stunned the New York Yankees at home 6-1.  Phillies pitching ace Cliff Lee looked like he could have pitched 27 innings without breaking a sweat and the Yankees modern day murders row turned out to be quite harmless.  In game 2 the Yankees will try to get back on track with A.J.  Burnett while the Phillies rely on Yankee nemisis Pedro Martinez.  This should be a barn burner.  The reigning world champion Phillies are off to a great start.  The Yankees will have to overcome the Philadelphia pitching if they want to win it all for the 27th time.

The Denver Broncos have to be reciting the famous phrase by commedian Rodney Dangerfield ” I get no respect I tell Ya, No respect”.  Denver travels to Baltimore for a major NFL matchup.  The Broncos are 6-0 this season and the Ravens are a dismal 3-3 and hardly living up to their expectations and yet the Ravens are still favored by 3.  This means that Denver has yet to convince anyone they are for real.  This game is going to be hard fought but I am afraid Denvers luck is about to run out.  My pick:  Baltimore 20-13

The New York Giants take a little trip down to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles.  The Giants are 5-2 while the Eagles are 4-2.  This one will depend a lot on which teams show up.  Both have looked very good and then very bad.  It is going to come down to who wants it more.  The Giants are favored by 1.  This one will be decided in the trenches.  I like the Giants 17-14

Monday night the Atlanta Falcons journey to New Orleans to take on the 6-0 Saints.  The Falcons are 4-2 and on paper you might think this will be a fair matchup.  The Saints are favored by 10 but have the capability of blowing this one out.  I like the Saints 35-21

I saved the best for last.  Brett Farve and the Minnesota Vikings slide over to Green Bay at frigid Lambeau field to take on da Packers.   There is going to be a rumble in cheese town.  Farve is going home to Green Bay but it is not to a ticker tape parade.  Fresh off of their defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers last sunday the 6-1 Vikings need this victory against their division foes the 4-2 Packers.  The Vikings are still the real deal.  The Packers are getting there.  The Pack is favored by 3 but I like the Vikings 24-20

I also like the Texans over Buffalo, the Bears over the Browns, the Cowboys over the Seahawks, the Rams over the Lions, the Colts over the 49ers, the Dolphins over the Jets, the Chargers over the Raiders, the Jags over the Titans and the Cardinals over the Panthers.  Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

The Major League Baseball Championship Series

The Major League Baseball season is winding down but not without a bang.  The battle for both the American and National League Pennant is about to commence and the cool October breeze is starting to heat up like a sizzling hot summer day.

The divisional series are over and 3 of the 4 teams left swept their opponents in 3 games.  The New York Yankees silenced the Minnesota Twins before they could even start thinking about what it would be like to play in the World Series.  The Yankees have a long tradition of winning world championships.  From the days of Babe Ruth,  Mickey Mantle and  Reggie Jackson to the present day Jeter, Rodriguez and Pettite this team resignates tradition.  The last time the Yankees won the World Series was in 2000.  The money line of -167 says they will win it again this year.

The Los Angeles Angels ran over the Boston Red Sox in 3 games and left them muttering “what the heck happened?”  You could have easily pictured a Yankee-Red Sox ALCS face off but the Angels had other ideals.  Although the odds are the Angels will fall to the mighty Yankees they may just have something to say about that as well.

The Los Angeles Dodgers stunned the St. Louis Cardinals in 3 games to return to the NLCS for the second year in a row.  To make it even sweeter they will get another crack at their opponents from last year the Philadelphia Phillies who went on to win last years World Series.  For Joe Torre, Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, there is something else that could sweeten the pie.  If they can beat the Phillies in the NLCS they could very likely meet the Yankees in the World Series.  The last Manager to win a World Series for the Yankees was the one and only Joe Torre.

For the latest playoff odds check Baseball betting

The only team not to sweep their divisional series was the Philadelphia Phillies but they did eliminate the Colorado Rockies in 4 games.  You would think that the Phillies would be favored after winning the World Series last year but the Dodgers are picked to win with the money line being -110.  The Phillies would like nothing better than a chance of winning 2 World Series in a row.

The odds are supporting a Los Angeles Dodger/New York Yankee World Series matchup.  Joe Torre managed the Yankees from 1996-2007 and won 10 divisional championships and 6 AL pennants and 4 world series.  He took over the reigns of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008.  A world series win over the New York Yankees could only add more luster to the amazing career of the 5th winningingest  coach in baseball history.   Until we meet again may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.

Major League Baseball Standings And Predictions

In the American League East the New York Yankees continue to lead the Boston Red Sox by 2.5 games.  There are still over 50 games to be played.  These two teams will battle it out right down to the end of the season.  Although the Red Sox have not played well against the West they have did very well in their own division.  In the end the Red Sox will take home another pennant.  The Detroit Tigers still lead the American League Central by 2.0 games over the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins.  However, this division is very much up for grabs.  It will come down too who has the depth to last down the stretch.  I believe the Tigers will find a way to hold on and win a pennant.

The Los Angeles Angels lead the American League West by 2.0 games over the Texas Rangers.  Although this division may appear to be up for grabs the Angels will win it hands down.  The Rangers will fall to the wayside.  Of course there are 50 games to play and anything can happen in sports.  There may be a few surprises left before the season is over.  After the dog days of August the view may have changed.

In the National League East the defending World Champion Philedelphia Phillies are leading the Florida Marlins by 7.0 games.  The Phillies, barring any major injuries, will hold on to this pennant and make a run at a second championship.  The National League Central is really up for grabs.  The St Louis Cardinals lead the Chicago Cubs by a 0.5 game margin with the Houston Astros only 2.5 games back.  The Cardinals have been the team to beat in the central division for a long time.  This year that may change.  But then it may not.  The Cardinals will edge this division out once again.

In the National League West the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the Colorado Rockies by 8.0 games.  Hands down the Dodgers will win the West and I believe they will face the Phillies in the National League Championship.  Of course there could be a surprise in the National League as well.  We will be following it closely.  Until we meet again may your betting be profitable and remember to always be a good sport.

The New York Yankee’s: The 200 Million Juggernaut

The All Star Game break is over and the New York Yankee’s of the American League East are on a tear.  They are 6-0 out the 2nd half gate and the Yankee’s are looking like the 200 million dollar juggernaut they were supposed to be.  Pitcher A.J. Burnett and the Yankee’s defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 sweeping the birds back to Maryland.  Burnett now has a 9-4 record on the season with a 3.81 earned run average.  Burnett has now won 4 straight decisions.  He was helped by the hot bat of Nick Swisher who has 14 home runs and 48 runs batted in on the season.

The Yankee’s are not 57-37 on the season, which leaves them totally alone in first place in the East for the first time since 2006 when they won the division.  The catcher Jose Posada homered and drove in 2 runs and A. Rod. drove in a run to clinch the series.  Mariano Rivera was the stopper once again as the relief pitcher obtained his 5th save in the last 6 games.  That all adds up to the thrill of victory but on the other side of the field the Baltimore team continues to slump as Baltimore pitcher Jason Berken lost his 8th game in a row.

The Yankee’s have won 19 out of their last 26 games to move 20 games over .500 and they have not completed that feat since 2007.  It does not appear that the Yankee winning streak is in any danger of ending.  They face the Oakland A’s next who are in last place in the American League West.  The Yankee’s are now watching the Boston Red Sox who are presently losing 3-1 against the Texas Rangers.  The Yank’s could pick up another game lead in the A.L. East.

Sometimes you can actually spend millions of dollars and put together a team that wins but as the Yankee’s have learned the hard way in the past it does not guarantee a World Series Championship.  This year they tore down the house that Babe Ruth built.  The Yankee’s have been legendary over the last century.  Perhaps they are close to being in championship form once again.  The odd’s are in their favor but are you willing to bet on it.  Until we meet again may your betting get better and remember to always be a good sport.
