Brawl leaves two top teams reeling from suspensions

Postby worldfun on Sun Aug 29, 2010 10:07 pm

The brawl between Greece and Serbia in a warmup game has left two of the top teams at the basketball world championship reeling from suspensions that have ruled out some of their best players for the start of the tournament.

Serbia will be without center Nenad Krstic for the first three games and guard Milos Teodosic for the first two. Power forward Antonis Fotsis and center Sofoklis Schortsanitis will miss Greece's first two games for their role in the Aug. 19 brawl.

The tournament that starts on Saturday in four Turkish cities already is already missing a number of top stars for various reasons, including Kobe Bryant and all the Olympic champion U.S. team, Pau Gasol of Spain and Dirk Nowitzki of Germany.

First day in Istanbul

Postby worldfun on Sun Aug 29, 2010 10:28 pm

he opening day of the FIBA World Championship was a huge success.

That was the message from FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann, who held his daily briefing with the media in Istanbul shortly before Sunday's game between the United States and Slovenia.

Baumann cited the competitiveness of the games and also recognized some of the youngsters that made stunning debuts with their senior teams, including France's electric guard Andrew Albicy and Team USA's Eric Gordon.

"It's going to be a very open championship," Baumann said.

"We had six game within the 10-point range.

"As predicted, there are many teams with a chances to win medal."

Albicy, a member of France's gold-medal winning side at the U20 European Championship in Croatia earlier this summer, has caused a buzz all over Turkey with his performance.

The 20-year-old scored 13 points in France's 72-66 Group D triumph over Spain.

Albicy's coach Vincent Collet gushed with praise of the effort, calling his display "exceptional."

Gordon, 21, caught fire from long range and poured in 16 points in the Americans’ 106-78 victory over Croatia.

Some of the big-name players couldn't represent their countries this summer, but the tournament isn’t suffering.

"The level isn't less," Baumann said.

"The technical level isn't less than what we saw in Beijing and it's time for some of these players to step out of the shadow of their companions.

"I'm sure you (journalists) are going to write about them for the next four, five or six years if they do well."

Organizers are celebrating the fact that fans have travelled to Turkey from all over the world.

"Thirty percent of the tickets went to foreign fans, and that is three times more than previous record at other World Championships," Baumann said.

Slovenia, as expected, had the most fans with 3,000 packing the Abdi Ipecki to watch their big victory over Tunisia while Lithuania had 2,000 attend their game in Izmir against New Zealand.

Argentina, the number one team in the FIBA World Rankings, had 1,000 supporters in Kayseri.

Lebanon, Spain and France also had 1,000 fans.

The huge interest was also reflected by the more than 1.5million people looking at FIBA.com to follow the tournament results, news and interviews.

Serbia took first place in the group

Postby zocipro on Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:55 pm

The United States, Turkey and Lithuania stormed into the Eight-Finals of the FIBA World Championship as the only undefeated sides while Serbia edged Argentina in a thriller to clinch first place in Group A.

On a dramatic last night of Preliminary Round play, the Serbians beat Argentina 84-82 in Kayseri to claim top spot and set up a clash with European rivals Croatia, who lost to Brazil in Group B on Thursday night.

Luis Scola poured in 32 points and became Argentina's all-time leading scorer in the process, while the hero for Serbia was Dusko Savanovic, who visited with FIBATV.Com after the game.

The Cajasol Sevilla star poured in a team-high 19 points and hit a key three-ball with 18 seconds remaining to snap a 77-77 tie and put Serbia in front to stay.

Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic said: "We have been watching Argentina for 10 years trying to learn. Today, I think, we taught them something."

Sergio Hernandez, the Argentina coach, said: "Many people thought that we would lose this game intentionally to get one more day off to rest in Istanbul but I don’t care what they thought.”

As for Scola, he came into the game with 325 points, behind Ernesto " Finito" Gehrmann who scored 331 points in the 1967 and 1974 editions. His two point basket with 9:31 in the second quarter broke the record. Australia hammered Angola 76-55 to seal third spot in Group A and give them a meeting with Slovenia in the next round.

Pat Mills was the only Boomer to hit double figures against the Angolans with 11 points.

Angola's defeat has thrown them into a game against tournament favorites Team USA.

The United States started slow but finished fast on Thursday against Tunisia.

The Americans only led 39-33 at half-time but pulled away in the second half for a 92-57 victory to leave the African nation without a win.

"We need to be ready for Angola because in the next stage, if we don't win, we don't win it," USA coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

"It's kind of like the NCAA tournament."

Slovenia, who had already clinched second place with Tuesday's triumph over the Brazilians, defeated Iran 65-60.

Looking ahead to the meeting with the Boomers, Slovenia captain Jaka Lakovic said: "They are a very physical team and they have great players. It’s going to be a very difficult test for us."

Brazil built a 25-point lead against Croatia in the third quarter and kept the pressure on in the fourth before winning 92-74 to finish third in Group B.

Leandro Barbosa and Alex Garcia dominated through the first three quarters when they combined for 32 of Brazil's 72 points. Anderson Varejao, in just his second game back from an ankle injury, had just two points but 12 rebounds in the opening three frames.

In Group C, the result of the day belonged to Ivory Coast, who got their first win by upsetting Puerto Rico and knocking the team from the FIBA Americas out of the tournament in the process.

Puerto Rico’s David Huertas spoiled their night, however, by hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer to leave the Africans with an 88-79 victory - not large enough to get them into the next round.

That's because Ivory Coast, Puerto Rico and China each had one victory and the Chinese team's goal differential in their games was superior, thus leaving them in fourth place.

Ivory Coast coach Randoald Dessarzin said: “It’s difficult, but this is basketball. It’s the best job in the world.

“I will remember the last seconds for the rest of my life. We have to take the experience. It’s a pity.

“The players made the effort to beat one of the best basketball teams in the world with serious talent.

“It’s a new start for Ivory Coast, a new cycle starting next year with the African Championship.”

Greece had maybe their worst performance of the tournament against Russia and lost 73-69 and dropped to third place while leaving Russia second.

China, with their qualification secure, rested Yi Jianlian against Turkey on Thursday night and lost to the tournament hosts, 87-40.

One of the more remarkable games to be played was the last in Group D between France and New Zealand.

France had won their first two games of the tournament and looked primed for at least a top-two finish but after falling to Lithuania on Wednesday they collapsed against New Zealand, losing 82-70.

Spain, New Zealand and France all finished with 3-2 records but since the French had a worse goal differential in the meetings between the three sides, they plummeted to fourth place with the Spanish second and New Zealand third.

That meant that France will now have to go up against Turkey in the Eight-Finals, while Spain will face Greece and New Zealand will go up against Russia.

New Zealand had needed to not only win against France but to do so by 12 in order to finish third and avoid tournament hosts and red hot Turkey.

France appeared to be in the driving seat in the final 20 seconds but Nicolas Batum fouled Kirk Penney, just as the tournament’s leading scorer was making a shot from behind the arc.

Penney sank the free-throw for a four-point play.

After Yannick Bokolo sank two free-throws for France, Vincent Collet’s side allowed Thomas Abercrombie to bank in a three-pointer from the left to give New Zealand a 12-point advantage with six seconds remaining.

Batum tried to hit a three-ball at the buzzer but it rimmed out.

“We played very, very bad, right from the beginning," Collet said.

"We came back at the end of the first quarter, but the worst one was the second one.

“The attitude we had showed in the first four games, we didn’t have in the second quarter.

“Even though we came back, we were running behind them the whole game.

“We left the most difficult until the end, we wanted to lose by 11 or less to avoid Turkey, but even that we couldn’t do, by not doing the foul on the last possession. We got what we deserved."

Spain guard Juan Carlos Navarro sat out the game against Canada with an injury but his team won 89-67.

Lithuania also rolled to victory against Lebanon, 84-66, and will face China in the Eight-Finals.

Hosts Turkey gave their fans a great reason to cheer by beating rivals Greece 76-65 and stand alone as the only undefeated team (3-0) in Ankara’s Group C.

Ersan Ilyasova was on fire from three-point territory, hitting on all six of his attempts on his way to a game-high 26 points.

Meanwhile in Izmir, Lithuania overcame a 15-point deficit and came back from 43-35 down at halftime to surprised reigning world champions Spain 76-73. Linas Kleiza had 17 points to lead Lithuania and Jonas Maciulus added 13. Marc Gasol had 18 points and eight rebounds but the likes of Juan-Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez failed to give him some valuable support.

France improved to 3-0 after edging out Canada 68-63 behind Nicolas Batum’s 24 points – 17 of them coming after the break – and seven rebounds. For the third straight game, Canada led entering the fourth quarter, 48-46, but saw that go to waste as they dropped to 0-3 and are headed out of the tournament.

Group C (Ankara): Puerto Rico recorded their first win by getting the better of China 84-76 in a high octane game. Angel Vassallo had 22 points and JJ Barea added 13 to go along with nine assists. Russia held off Ivory Coast to improve to 2-1 with a 72-66 win. David Blatt’s men were up 68-55 with 1:40 to go before the Elephants got within 68-66 thanks to the late scoring heroics of Guy Edi but the Russians sealed the game from the free-throw line to end the minnows’ hopes of reaching the second round.

Group D (Izmir): New Zealand ran out to a 32-16 first quarter lead to thump Lebanon 106-78 in recording their first victory. Kirk Penney had 26 points in the winning cause, but more importantly benefited from great support as rising stars Thomas Abercrombie (23 points and seven rebounds) and Mika Vukona (11 points, seven rebounds and four assists) made their presence felt.

China deserver their luck

Postby sportspro on Fri Sep 03, 2010 10:03 pm

For those who think Chinese basketball is nowhere without Yao Ming, think again.

China, against all expectations, have earned a trip to the Eight-Finals at a FIBA World Championship for the second time in a row only this time, without their 7ft 5in Yao leading the way.

The Chinese fought their first four Group C opponents every inch of the way in Ankara but only managed to beat Ivory Coast, 83-73.

The basketball gods rewarded them for their effort, though, and once again it was a three-pointer that put them into the knockout phase of the tournament.

Unlike four years ago in Sapporo, however, when Wang Shipeng buried a desperation three at the buzzer against Slovenia to advance at the expense of Puerto Rico, this time the three-ball was not made by China.

On Thursday, the last day of pool play, it was a three by Puerto Rico that put China through.

With Puerto Rico being upset and knocked out of the tournament by Ivory Coast, David Huertas buried a shot from the arc at the buzzer to leave the Africans with an 88-79 victory.

Since China, Puerto Rico and Ivory Coast each had one win, goal differential was used a tie-breaker to determine fourth place.

Had Huertas missed, Ivory Coast would have had the best goal differential in the games between Puerto Rico, China and the African team.

As it was, China progressed on the goal differential tie-breaker.

If China were Yao Ming's team four years ago in Japan and in 2008 in Beijing, China is now Yi Jianlian's team.

The seven-footer is third in the tournament in scoring at 22.5 points per game.

In Istanbul, where China have moved to play in the Eight-Finals against Lithuania, Yi spoke to FIBA.com.

"We have played some good games," Yi said.

"We have played well from the beginning, but we are lucky to have made it to this round.

"I am very happy for the team and for my teammates. We have fought hard. We have shown in every game that we want to win."

Without question, one reason for China's success has been the arrival of American Bob Donewald as coach.

Donewald, who coached Shanghai in the CBA, has turned the Chinese into a team of fighters.

"The coach tells us to keep our focus and believe in ourselves," Yi said.

"He brings energy to this team."

Can China now surprise undefeated Lithuania?

"We have played well in our last four games and we have to keep doing that in our next game," Yi said.

"We need to be focused on the court, play good defense and take care of rebounding.

"I think if we do that we can do well."

Scola Best all of the time

Postby interested on Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:28 pm

Argentinian national team captain, Luis Scola, made history in the first half of the game against Serbia as he became the all time leading scorer of his national team in FIBA World Championships.

He came into the game with 325 points, behind Ernesto " Finito" Gehrmann who scored 331 points in the 1967 and 1974 editions. His two point basket with 9:31 in the second quarter broke the record.

Scola has participated in three FIBA World Championships (2002, 2006 and 2010) and so far is on pace to break the average record with 28.2 points per game, the record was also by Gehrmann with 23.4 points achieved in 1974 in Puerto Rico.

His scoring so far has been key in securing victories for his and also holds the opposition’s rallies over their four games with his high percentage shots.

After losing match against Turkey Russia’s coach David Blatt stated that we have still chance to pass the Preliminary Round.

“Turkey is such a strong team. They have 4 NBA players and also the players who have Euroleague experience. I think their chance on Championship is high.” said David Blatt.

“We lost the game badly but our chances did not decrease for the second round. Our first goal is passing to Preliminary Round and secondly we should end the group at the best place due to match-up.

“Lithuania is a small country but if we look at our team’s quality, it is getting better and better” – Lithuania coach Kestutis Kemzura after his side won for the fourth straight time

"To lose by 20 points against a team like Croatia is a good result for us. I didn't think we could achieve that before the start of the tournament" - Tunisia boss Adel Tlatli on his side's 84-64 defeat

Next Step via Angola

Postby worlder on Mon Sep 06, 2010 7:27 pm

The United States dusted off the cobwebs and rolled to another decisive victory over Angola in a major international competition.

Bringing back memories of the 1992 Olympics and even the Beijing Games from two years ago when the Americans claimed big wins against the African championship, Mike Krzyzewski's USA played for the first time since their big Group B win over Tunisia on Thursday and claimed a 121-66 victory to stay unbeaten in the FIBA World Championship.

Unlike their African brothers Tunisia, who only trailed 39-33 at half-time against Team USA, Angola never mounted a serious challenge.

The Americans had a stranglehold on the contest by the end of the first quarter.

Everything unraveled quickly for Angola, who only trailed 12-7 after a three-ball from Angola's Joaquim Gomes.

The tournament favorites replied with a Kevin Durant lay-up that sparked a 10-0 run.

Chauncey Billups, who led the USA with 19 points, hit one of his five three-pointers in that run while Durant also stopped and popped from long range to make it 22-7.

Gomes, who had a game-high 21 points, stopped the rot for Angola with a jumpshot but the Americans quickly got into transition and Odom scored at the other end to make it 24-9.

By the end of the frame, the lead was 20 and the advantage ballooned to 65-38 by half-time.

Roberto Fortes did come off the bench to provide Angola fans with a few thrills, hitting all three of his three-pointers before the break.

The USA got back-to-back shots from the arc by Derrick Rose to start the second half and pulled away for a decisive victory.

While the Angolans stayed on the court to receive good-bye applause from the crowd since their tournament was over, the Americans left the court in a good mood.

Durant and Gay even playfully slapped Mascat – the mascot of the FIBA World Championship – in the head before running to the locker room.

Far more serious and exiting times await the USA, who will face either Russia or New Zealand in the Quarter-Finals.
