Alabama vs Notre Dame: January 7, 2013
Tonight in Miami, FL the BCS National Championship Game kicks off in Sun Life Stadium. The #1 and #2 college football teams in the country square off for the coveted national title. Tonight it will be the #1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama played their first football game in 1887; more than 125 years ago. Notre Dame followed in 1892; five years later. Since then these teams have certainly made their mark on the national stage with the Crimson Tide racking up 14 national titles and the Fighting Irish 11. Alabama has earned 826 victories over the years; while the Fighting Irish have accumulated 865. The Fighting Irish have delivered 7 Heisman Trophey winners; while the Crimson Tide have delivered 1. These two teams have faced one another 6 times with the Fighting Irish winning 5 of the contests.
Alabama is 12-1 on the season losing only to Texas A&M. Their offense scored 38.5 points per game on the year and their defense only gave up 10.7, which ranks them #2 in the nation. Notre Dame is undefeated this season with a 12-0 record. Their offense scored 26.8 points per game, but their defense only allowed 10.3 points per game, which ranks them #1 in the country.
Alabama has won the BCS 2 out of the last 3 years and can make it 3 out of 4 years if they win tonight. Tonight is their 60th bowl game appearance, which is the best in NCAA history. Notre Dame has now put together their 13th season where they finished undefeated. They won their last national championship in 1988. The Fighting Irish beat the Crismon Tide 37-6 in their last meeting a quarter of a century ago.
The Alabama Crimson Tide is favored by 10 in this game; mostly in part because they have won the last 2 out of 3 BCS Titles and have scored more than 10 points per game more than the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Most of those daring enough to make predictions on this game cite the fact that Alabama's offensive line is too much for most defenses and that this team has more experience overall. I do not agree. Alabama can be beat as Texas A&M proved this season. Alabama has not faced a defense this year as good as Notre Dame. I like the Fighting Irish by 6 points.
One thing for sure is that this is not the college game you want to miss this season. It is bound to be a great game for the better willing to accept the challenge. Until we meet again, may your betting be better and remember to always be a good sport.
