When people get ready to start betting on college basketball, they often think of the big names.  They watch Duke or North Carolina.  But you will quickly find that the best bets aren’t always on the highly publicized or most well-known programs. 

When it comes to a college basketball season, there are lots of games on a daily basis.  On Saturdays, there are even more games.  Because there are so many being played every day, it is harder for linemakers to come up with numbers for the games that are accurate.  There is more room for mistakes, which actually can work out in your favor sometimes.

Watch the Schedule

One thing you have to watch is a team’s schedule.  Sometimes it may appear that a team gives up a lot of points, when really, their losses are simply due to being placed up against a string of difficult teams.  You may find that in another game lineup, they are more matched up and stand a better chance of winning, so you may choose to place your bet on that game.  It is important to consider not only the big name schools, but also the no-names if you’re really looking to score some bucks.

Place Bets During College Conference Play

You can really start to get into the swing of placing bets during college conference play.  Matchups are generally better, and competition really steps up.  Once non-conference games are over, teams become more focused and you get to see what they are really all about.  You might find that a team who didn’t seem as strong begins to improve, or a team that seemed able to do it all might fall short when it comes to playing comparable teams.

Another thing you want to do before placing bets is check to see if the two teams have played before.  Then, check out their record against each other.  Also, be sure to consider whether the teams won at home or away.  Sometimes being on the home court can have a huge advantage and make quite a difference.

Bet on the Best Teams

When it comes to tournament games, you are looking at the best of the best teams.  Gone are the teams who know they’re going to lose and no longer have the heart to win.  Instead, you are looking at the teams who are motivated to keep going and who want to take it all.

Consider the Road Play

The most important things to consider during tournaments are road play, location, and history.  Figure out how each team fares when they are traveling.  There are teams out there who simply cannot play as well when they are not at home.  If teams are away, check out where they are playing.  A particular team might play well in L.A. but not in Miami.  These are important things to consider.  Finally, just know the history of the matchups.  You’ll want to know how the two teams did against each other previously in the season as well as in other years.  Find out if there is a rivalry.  If so, each team will most likely be playing even harder to win.
